1880’s mounted cards inquiry

I’ve got six mounted photo cards (circa 1887) depicting lesser known fighters of the day, but whose studio pictures were taken by famed baseball photographer John Wood of New York. These aren’t Newsboy or Old Judge cabinets, but they are of a like size. Nor is the name of the fighter identified on the face of the mount. So, without an embossed ID and a blank back, what purpose did the cards serve? I do want to part with them, but before learning more.

Can you post some pictures?

Hit the attachments icon in the "Reply to Thread" panel, and upload directly from your computer with the "Browse" button.

I think it compresses images for you when you upload. but you might still have to shrink them down if they are too large. I'm not sure.

I don't know if it helps, but here is an archive of articles and photographs relating to the photographer John Wood:

John Wood cabinets

Thanks for helping me resolve the upload issue, and for finding that collection of other John Wood cabinets on Pinterest. None of my cards are identified on the mount although I have ID’d most of them. I’m still at a loss to understand why the boxers aren’t identified like Newsboy cards.

It's awesome they have the actual John Wood mounts, often they are John Wood photos on either anonymous or other studios mounts.

Not being identified is fairly common for the era. Frustrating as hell to us modern day collectors, but pretty common.
