Ty, you had to know I would post that I love your latest pickups ;)
|
Just got back from vacation. I go to the same place every August and there's a card shop nearby, run by an older guy out of his house. My boys and I always visit and my favorite thing to do is sift through his "M.A.S.H. Box." It's full of beaters, but priced accordingly, with lots of star power. It's a fun escape from graded cards, which are mostly what I collect these days. Was thrilled to pick up the '52 Bowman Large HOF RC below. As I mentioned, it's beat to hell, but that's probably the only condition in which I could afford one, and I think it still has great color. Only $10.
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...narik%20RC.jpg |
Nice pick up Dan! That card is on my wantlist too, and $10 is a great bargain!
Larry |
Thanks Larry. It's outside my normal wheelhouse (Cappelletti and Hannah cards), but it's a HOF RC and a short print, from an iconic set. Thought it was too good to pass up. Picked up a nice '77 Too Tall Jones for a buck as well.
|
Great Bednarik card for a very reasonable price. I'd like to have a brick & mortar store nearby for the off-chance of a find like that.
|
Hey guys, turns out the Bednarik isn't his RC, not even close. A bunch of you guys (Jeff!) must know that. Why didn't anybody correct me? The sticker on the top loader said RC and I took it as fact. Turns out that between Topps Magic, Leaf and Bowman he had 5 earlier cards. I knew about the Leaf and forgot. My bad. It's still an SP, still an iconic card, and still a bargain (to me) at $10. But not an RC.

Picked up three early 80's football sets (81-82-83) to add to the run. A huge shout-out and thank you to board member Cory (AddieJoss), a pleasure doing business. Exactly as advertised. The top tier HOF's cards were a welcome surprise; many in NM-MT condition with superb centering. An overall, great transaction :)

Great sets, Ty. Congrats on the pickup!

Thanks Rob. I tried to find copies in good shape, and I wasn't to worried about them being OC, since they aren't going anywhere. I will keep you in mind when I get my checklist together. |
Got a unique group of items in the mail today, a group of NFL transparency slides of the New England Patriots. These slides were produced by the NFL for use in television broadcasts. They were issued from 1968-88 and this first group is from 1973, meaning this is a Hannah pre-RC of sorts, produced a year before his Topps RC. The Tippett is a pre-RC as well, from 1982, 2 years before his RC.
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...s%20slides.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ah%20slide.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...tt%20slide.jpg The seller was very knowledgeable about dating these, and this is an excerpt of his email regarding the Tippett being an 82: 1983s had plastic frame & 1984-88 were not numbered but used uniform numbers on the slides. 88 was last year of issue. |
Very interesting Dan. Were these issued for every team, or was this a regional, Boston area newspaper collection? Slides are overlooked as collectibles IMO. Another great Hannah ;)
|
Thanks. These were issued by the league for 21 years, with players from all teams. Each year's "set" includes hundreds of slides. I'm stoked on the Hannah and Tippett pre-RCs

Those are pretty neat Dan.

Here are my most recent 1977 Topps Mexican pick-ups. Up to 147 of 528.
The OJ makes me incredibly uncomfortable, however comparably graded SGC & BVG '77's go for nearly 50% the cost of a PSA in this set. Seems to be some registry envy. Strange, especially considering the other two cards, both PSA graded, were improperly labeled as "1977 Topps", though they are obviously "1977 Topps Mexican". Not sure why PSA is considered the de facto experts on such things when they make bone-headed mistakes such as these. There were actually four incorrectly labeled Mexicans in the recent pick-up, all sequentially graded. Thank you Jeremy for the recent additions :) Oops, I criticized a TPG without my name in the post, Ty Phelan http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...psabtmzizz.jpg |
I'm sure I've missed posting some things in my absence, but this is my latest pickup. Second copy, but I wasn't passing it up.

As I try to close out my '52 Bowman football sets, pick-ups are slowing way down LOL! But when an eBay Bucks 10X promotion kicked in, I did a little shopping:)
1952 Bowman Large #10 (SP) Chuck Bednarik Standard Catalog values $300 NM this card was $46.50 shipped or 15.5% book. 1952 Bowman Small #142 Tom Landry $325 NM value card cost me $36.50 shipped or 11.2% book. "chipping away at it" Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%201_36.jpghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...Scan%202_6.jpg |

Love the 3 Bowmans on this page and Ty, keep those Mexis coming!
|
Bulldog and Bednarik - pretty tough guys on the field. I don't get that many cards because much of my interest pre-dates these sets, but I did pick up a trio of programs that are right in my wheel-house.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8424/2...fbfaab13_b.jpg |
Sweet Staten Island Stapletons programs! They played the Giants tough on Thanksgiving Day games (1929-32). I really wish the current NFL would highlight these early rivalries, when pertinent, such as during a Jets v. Giants game.

Two arrivals today via eBay, as I try to finish my Bowman sets. Ten cards left to complete 1952 Bowman Large set!
Bowman Large #36 John Hancock RC this card is not listed as an SP, yet it "books" for $400 in NM condition? It does not appear that John played in the NFL either. Cost me $67.50 delivered (after eBay Bucks 10X) or 17% book. Bowman Large #30 Sammy Baugh also "books" for $400 cost me $54 (after eBay Bucks 10X) or 13.5% book. Tough set! Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_28.jpeghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...an%201_16.jpeg |
Nice Sammy!

You can't go wrong with any Bowman Sammy Baugh. Sharp 52!

49 Leaf Baugh and 55 Topps AA Thorpe
The Baugh is an upgrade from my PSA 4 and I think it cost me the same so no harm there. The Thorpe is the card I've been wanting for awhile. Its a tough one to find centered and not beat to hell. This one is slightly off centered maybe 70/30 but it doesn't have the tilt. It has an indentation as if it had been written on hence the lower grade, other than that its a decent pickup.

With the arrival of this gorgeous 1961 Fleer #197 Jim Otto RC today, I finished my 1961 Fleer football set. This was an eBay pick-up listed in "lot" form with '74 and '75 Topps Otto cards included. I didn't need (I thought) either of the other two cards so was bidding to win the '61 Fleer. When I pulled out my '74 and '75 Topps sets to check for upgrades, I found my set '74 set was missing #409 Jim Otto LOL!
The Standard Catalog says the '61 Fleer Jim Otto RC is "valued" in NM condition at $45, and I won the three card lot for $16.50. However the seller stung me for $3.99 shipping so I paid 52% book to finish my set. I've been chasing this card for awhile! Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%204_5.jpeghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%205_2.jpeg |
I love early 60s fleer football and the Otto RC is a great one to finish your set. Congrats!

congrats on finishing your sets.

There are only 4 HOFers deemed by the Football HOF to be "primary contributors" to the Patriots franchise. I collect their RCs as a side project and I added this one today:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...T%20Haynes.jpg I'm missing the most significant, the 63 Fleer Nick Buoniconti - not only a HOF RC, but a short print too. Here are the rest: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...nah%20PSA8.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0PSA%20med.jpg Obviously Brady will eventually be added to the list. Other future possibilities I see are Ty Law and Adam Vinatieri |

Two hits arrived today via eBay purchase.
1952 Bowman Small #14 Paul Brown. I know so little pro football history but the Wiki entry for Paul Brown is long, and I'll need to go back and read it again. He was the Cleveland Browns first coach, and the team was named for him. The Cincinnati Bengals stadium is named for him too. Just those two facts are incredible to me. Pro football HOF 1967. The "book" price on this card NM is $170 and this beat up example cost me $25.25 or around 14% this card isn't cheap. Next hit 1952 Bowman Large #28 SP Kyle Rote RC. The card "books" for $200 NM and I got it for 13.5% book $26.81. Kyle was the number one pick in the 1951 NFL Draft. Also was the NFLPA 1st President, and fought hard for equal opportunity for players. I like to keep my purchases at 10% of "book", but the smaller my wantlist gets, it gets tougher to hold the line! Larry <a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Scan_31.jpeg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Scan_31.jpeg" border="0" alt=" photo Scan_31.jpeg"/></a><a href="http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Scan%201_20.jpeg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Scan%201_20.jpeg" border="0" alt=" photo Scan 1_20.jpeg"/></a> |
Second day in a row with an arriving hit to my list:D 1952 Bowman Small #29 Hugh Mcelhenny is one of the few cards left to complete my set. The Standard Catalog book price NM is $175 for Mcelhenny, and I paid $15.24 (shipped) which included these three cards, and also three different 1951 Bowman football cards I already have. So Mcelhenny goes into my set, the other five will first be checked for upgrades, and then mailed out for trades.

Wow....great centering Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
OK, got a recent purchase of obscure cards for my player collections, at a great price. But there's a bit of a mystery. Don't know if anybody here can help, but I know we have some oddball kings and some Pats fans, so I figured I'd try. First, here are scans of the cards:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Hannahs.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Tippett.jpg I know these are both from Frito Lay Patriots sets (obviously) but I don't know what year(s) and neither did the seller. The Frito Pats sets are blank backed, so no help there. Hannah's and Tippett's careers only overlapped from 1982-86. According to the Beckett big book, this is the breakdown by year. 1982: Hannah only and this isn't that one, which I already have. 1983: no set 1984: no set 1985: neither player 1986: Tippett only So it appears there are 3 possibilities: 1. These are from the same year and checklists are incorrect 2. There really were Frito sets in 1983 & 84 3. They are from different years If #3 and the checklists are correct/complete, then the Tippett is from the 86 set and Hannah is from a different year. The Beckett checklists include him in 1976, 79 and 81. Probably boring to most of you, but I'm hoping to get to the bottom of this. I've emailed Mike Mosier at Columbia City Collectibles and hoping he'll chime in. |
These just back from Newport Beach:

It may not look like a big pick-up, but it finished out my SGC run of Topps/Philly/Fleer Unitas from '58 thru '74. I retain my RC in its ungraded splendor.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...C/100_2996.jpg The full run can be seen here, with a few extra PSA/BVG thrown in. Thanks for the look. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/kurr...?sort=6&page=1 |

I've been on the west coast for several weeks babysitting grandkids:) Was able to pick up one needed card while at a show there. 1952 Bowman Small Art Donovan RC, books for $225 in NM shape.
Pro Football HOF 1968. WWII vet ammo-loader on a 40MM gun on an aircraft carrier and saw action at Iwo Jima and the Battle of Luzon. Can you imagine? Five cards left to complete my set. Another Frito Hannah. He's in 5 Frito sets and I now have his single from 3 of those years. This is the earliest of the bunch, 1976:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...o%20Hannah.jpg It came in a lot with these: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Neville.jpg #77 is Tom Neville, 1976. The Grogan might be from the 76 set, or the 1977-78 set. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Francis.jpg #86 is 4x Pro Bowler Stanley Morgan, 1977-78 set. Number 81 is TE Russ Francis, 1976 |
Frito Lay
My understanding is that the 1976 Set is 5x7, while the 1977 Set is 4x6. Like you, I've been trying to figure out these Frito Lay cards.
I was the underbidder on that lot. Was only interested in the Morgan. Any chance you would be willing to sell it? |
