Do any "official" Negro League cards exist ?

Posted By: steve
Satchel and Dizzy Dean would hook up back in the 1930's - drew enormous crowds. Poor Josh Gibson was just too old to make it to the white Majors when the color barier was broken.

Are there any known officially cataloged Negro League cards/sets that were produced in the 1920's thru 1940's ?

I have never seen a PSA or SGC official Negro League card.

If so, I imagine an old 1930's Satchell Paige would be very rare and bring huge $$$.

Thanks for your thoughts, Steve

Posted By: Chad
At the National in Chicago a couple of years ago, a few Negro League "cards" were being sold, but those were really cutouts of posters. On one of the card pricing websites, a team set put out by the Kansas City Monarchs in the early 50's is listed but I've never seen them or heard of anyone who has. I'm skeptical they even exist but I hope that they do. The only cards you're going to find of Negro Leaguers are their American issued cards after integration, or there are a ton of Latin cards--Cuban, Puerto Rican, Venezuelan--that include Negro League players. Check out cubanbaseballcards.com for a primer.

But you're right, if a miracle find of cards made by say, Gus Greenlee to advertise his restaurant popped up, it would be the find of the century. Imagine a Crawfords team set with Oscar Charleston, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson...I mean, DAMN.

--Chad

Posted By: Phil Garry
I believe there have been a few, very rare postcards picturing Negro League individual players (Josh Gibson, Jud Wilson) & Negro League teams from the time period you mentioned. These are extremely expensive if you can find any and many may be unique (1-of-a-kind) items.
