What TPG do you use for your personal collection?

Just wanting to get a sense of people's preferences. What TPG do you prefer to use on the cards that go into your personal, long-term collection of vintage, pre-war baseball cards? Interested to see the results. Thanks.

I prefer SGC for pre-war and PSA for post-war.

  1. If it's in a holder I leave it, but I have cracked a lot of older SGC holders.
  2. The gaskets in their new holders don't show the debris trapped inside as badly as the older ones.
  3. PSA has best eye appeal (don't kill me!) and obviously more popular.
  4. Like them raw

Why do you only have to use one? I have used all three.

Steve D 04-30-2021 01:48 PM

It depends. With post WW1, or if I'm building a full set, I prefer PSA, just because of the Registry aspect. For single, pre-WW1 cards, I'll get both PSA and SGC.

I only have less than 10 Beckett-graded cards, and they are all modern, post 2000 issues.

PSA and SGC

For one reason and one reason only, ease of liquidation with the best chance of appreciation.

Whatever slab the card comes in and I'll use whatever service is accepting onsite submissions for whatever show I'm at.

PSA or SGC. Which ever one the card is in. PSA for value , SGC for aesthetics. And please no insulting, but the occasional deal can be found with BVG.

BobbyStrawberry 04-30-2021 02:21 PM

PSA for some sets, SGC for others. Unlike some collectors, I don't ever decide this based on projected future resale value.

I don't really have a preference anymore. The few I've sent in myself were to SGC, but I have cards in four different slabs, five if you count modern.

Lately I'm neither happy about how hopeless they seem, and at the current crazy prices for grading.

I have only submitted to SGC so it may be a biased preference. Not sure I will be submitting anymore other than possibly fourteen cards if I end up picking them up raw in the future to finish graded sets.

Exhibitman 05-01-2021 07:47 AM

I voted none because I don't really care to use any of them and have been replacing my slabbed postwar cards with raw ones.

egri 05-01-2021 05:06 PM

I voted raw because I like being able to handle the cards, and it's easier to store them in a binder than in slabs.

If you were older , then '' All Four"

What.... No GAI, KSA or CSG? (Who determined that all TPGs had to have 3-initial names, anyway?)

The SCD and SGC examples present the best IMHO, with the black framing. Much more attractive than PSA and Beckett.

Apparently, some people didn't get the memo:

For those who don't want to click on the link, it's a very generous EX 5 '59 Mantle sold on ebay graded by Snaggletoothgrading. While I can identify with the name, I don't think I'd use them.
