Trade Event

I will be there unless snowed in. Got a reservation at Hilton Embassy Suites Dulles North Louden.

Will bring some obscure Yankee stuff.

brass_rat 10-29-2022 08:38 AM

Ryan,

Great idea to bring this back -- thanks to organizing with Andrew.

I have this on my calendar -- it'll definitely be worth the drive, so hopefully the schedule stays clear so that I can attend.

Nice to have something to look forward to in the depths of winter.

Cheers,
Steve

Anyone want to car pool from NY

I'm in. I'm in Long Island. If you are local and want to car pool, PM me.

Rhotchkiss 12-03-2022 05:46 PM

Went to Philly show today and saw many net54 friends (Scott, Howard, DJ, Dan, Ted, Bill, William, etc), including Andrew, who is co-hosting this event, and it serves as a reminder to bump this thread.

Come one, come all. Lots to do in DC if you want to make a weekend of it.

Estwd 12-03-2022 08:39 PM

I'll be there, not far from me in Philly. Hopefully some of you have some obscure Ted Williams cards/pieces I need.

Never been to one of these, but are we allowed to straight up buy cards at the event if we can't work out a trade?

Rummage those shoeboxes, these are the Ted Williams that I need:

1939 Goudey Premiums Canadian V351
1946 Sports Exchange W603 Red Sox Team Pic
1947 Bond Bread Dual-Sided Perforated
1948 Nabisco Shredded Wheat Action Ring Promo
1950 R423 Purple Back
1955 Hocus Focus
1959 Dad’s Cookies
1959 Fleer # 80 PSA 9
1970 OPC #211 PSA 8
1971 Topps #380 PSA 9
1971 OPC #380 PSA 8
1971 Topps #462 PSA 9
1972 OPC #510 PSA 8
1973 OPC #7 PSA 8.5

Look forward to meeting folks!

theshowandme 12-03-2022 08:57 PM

Talked to Andrew about this at the Philly show. Will be the next card event I go to between now and Chantilly.

Can’t wait to see what everyone brings to show off!

This is only the second one we have done (in MDVA). There are no rules per se, except it’s not a “card show”. You don’t have dealers and buyers. Just a bunch of people, all of whom bring and display cards of general similar era, and if deals happen (by trade or cash), great.

I think we have room for 100+ people and there will be lots of tables to set up at, but again, not as a dealers

Ryan pretty much covered everything in the first post, but as “co-host” of this event, I wanted to introduce myself to those that may not know me (I don’t post as often as some), and also provide a brief update. We will have a 1700 SF room for the event (the Monroe room), and I will be meeting with 1757 staff in early February to discuss how we will configure tables/chairs etc.

The club has a restaurant (with good food IMO - and reasonably priced) and a full bar, in a room adjacent to where we will be. Unfortunately, we will not be able to use the restaurant area because it will be undergoing a renovation, but the full food and drink menu will be available to order from, and we will have a separate area where we can sit and eat.

At the first event that Ryan organized and hosted a few years ago, most people displayed their cards at a table to facilitate viewing - not in a formal way like a card show, but more casually like a bunch of friends getting together to look at cards. That said, please feel free to bring a display case or two if you would like. Certainly not necessary, but an option. Trading, buying, selling - all fine - or just display your collection so others can see some cool cards.

I truly hope that we have a great turnout, and that no one skips the event because they think their cards won’t be “good enough”. All are welcome, and I look forward to meeting lots of Net54 members that I don’t already know.

I will be there and I am very excited for this event.

A New Year bump. Hope to meet/see some of you there. It’s free and should be fun. PM Andrew or me with questions (he will have more answers than I!)

Andrew/Ryan,
I'm really looking forward to this event. How much table space is each attendee likely to have to display their cards/memorabilia?

How do the "mechanics" work? Display cards, list, etc.

Jewish-collector 01-09-2023 01:06 PM

What if we are not bringing any cards ? Is that OK ?

Rhotchkiss 01-09-2023 01:18 PM

Val, I defer to Andrew on your question-he is much more familiar with the space

Howard, mechanics... Based on the last one, I think people will show up with cards and they will grab a table and set up their cards at the table (loose or in a case). People will walk around looking at each other's stuff. Some people will trade. Others may buy and/or sell. Others may just show things off and talk. Its pretty relaxed and its really an opportunity for collectors to get together with their cards and see where it goes. It is not a card show in the traditional sense. Its much more collegial than that.

When I was young (like 12-16), I would take binders and boxes of cards to a friend's house, and other kids may come over and do the same, and we would look at each other's stuff, trade, make deals, talk, and then eventually go outside and play football or something. This is intended to be that for adults.

Andrew - I invite you to comment. Also Val or anyone else who was at the last one, please feel free to speak up.

There are no rules and its pretty organic. Its intended to be fun

Andrew1975 01-09-2023 03:10 PM

Val, I’m not sure I can give a definitive answer about how much space each person will have, because I don’t know how many people are going to show up. We have gotten a positive response, so that is great. That said, the room is pretty large, and I don’t expect that space will be an issue. If anyone shows up with a card show booth amount of stuff, that won’t work, but everyone should have room for at least a few display cases (or equivalent) if they want. A formal display is certainly not necessary for those that prefer to just bring a box full of cards and walk around. I am going to meet with the catering director at the club in the next week to go over table layout etc., so if I have a better idea after that, I will definitely provide an update.

Ryan expressed pretty accurately what I expect the atmosphere will be like. Certainly not formal like a card show with dealers on one side of a table and buyers on the other. I think it will be more like a bunch of friends getting together to hang out and look at cool cards in a very casual way. I’m sure that some deals/trades will happen, but really that is not necessarily the main objective in my view.

Yes, it is fine to come even if you don’t bring any cards, but I would encourage you to bring whatever you collect.

Finally, one item that I wish I didn’t have to bring up, but need to… There are likely to be some very nice cards in the room, and the last thing we want is for anything to go “missing”. Although I certainly hope and expect that there won’t be any issues, I would strongly encourage everyone to keep eyes on their stuff at all times.

parkplace33 02-02-2023 07:39 AM

Ryan,

Any idea how many members will be there? About two weeks away from this event:)

Rhotchkiss 02-02-2023 09:03 AM

Hi Drew, I am not sure. Andrew, any idea? I would put the over-under at 25, but it may be many more, as (1) I know Andrew has told some folks of Facebook tobacco row, and (2) I never asked anyone to RSVP so I expect we will get at least double the 15+/- people who expressly said they are coming. I think 35-50 would be great - the venue is certainly big enough.

philliesfan 02-02-2023 09:22 AM

I hope this thing keeps going for a few years. Right now it is over a 3 hour drive for me here above Philly, Pa. In about 2 years when I retire we are moving to Chesapeake, MD. area which will only be just a little over an hour. So, like I said, I hope this keeps going I would love to check it out.

Vintagedeputy 02-02-2023 11:05 AM

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I will throw this out there.

There's a group here in Northern Virginia that I have been following for a bit. They do group subs to SGC for $18 per card. I have had a stack of cards sitting here to go to SGC and for weeks have been trying to catch up with them, but life keeps getting in the way.

I have mentioned this meet up to them, and suggested that that may want to stop by and see if anyone wants to submit any cards to SGC. They said that they have an account here but are not active posters, so I directed them to this thread.

If anyone is interested in sending in some cards, maybe express some interest here and perhaps they'll join us.

Jewish-collector 02-02-2023 11:12 AM

You could have this meetup be like a annual Virginia Net54 dinner. :D It might be too late for this time, but you could get an auction house, grading company, etc,... to sponsor the event and/or get a speaker.

I wouldn't be shocked if 40+ people showed up over the course of the day. The event is from 1-6pm, so people will be coming/going during that time and not necessarily all there at once. Below is a picture I took of the Monroe Room when I went there a few weeks ago to meet with the 1757 event coordinator. The room is larger than it appears in the picture, and there will be many more tables.

We will also have access to the restaurant (which is adjacent to the Monroe Room). We wont be able to set up card displays etc. in that area, but will be able to use it as a place to eat/drink/hang out. The second picture below is of the restaurant area. When I took the photos, they were in the midst of moving tables around for some sort of event. They will be configured differently for our event.

One last update with a few final details...

The event is officially from 1-6PM on the 18th, however, feel free to arrive as early as 12:30 if you would like some extra time to set up.

Regarding table space, I think we will have plenty of room, but since we don't know exactly how many people will show up, my guidance would be for everyone to expect enough room to set up two showcases (or equivalent). It is entirely possible that there will be more room than that, but no guarantee. Table space location will be on a first come/first served basis.

When you arrive at 1757 (45120 Waxpool Road, Dulles, VA), there will be plenty of parking in front of the clubhouse. Use the main entrance (see photo below) and take a left once you are in the clubhouse. You will see the Monroe Room on your right.

Name tags will be available, and are recommended, since many of us may only know names and/orNet54 profile names, but not faces.

The event is free to attend, and food/drinks can be purchased from the restaurant and bar. Everyone will have their own bill/tab. I would request that you tip appropriately for good service.

Please watch your cards at all times.

I am really looking forward to the event and hope to see a lot of you there.

I have gotten a few emails about what will be at the show and who can come. set let me clarify:

All are Welcome. However....

The primary subject of the event is PREWAR BASEBALL.

With all respect, we do not want much other than baseball and the baseball we want is generally pre 1950's+/-. So please come, one and all, but leave your post 1950s+ and non-baseball stuff in the car or at home, as space could be limited.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing many of you

Danny Smith 02-09-2023 09:25 AM
