I've been gone the past 3.5 weeks on a great adventure. Helping my oldest son (in picture) move his wife and three kids (7, 5, 3 months) from Vail Colorado to Napa California. Think 26 foot U-Haul towing one vehicle, and me at the wheel of the "family truckster" with the grandkids:o

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/IMG_3068.jpg
I enjoyed keeping up with all the activities here on Net54, and am REALLY looking forward to Tuesday when I can pick up all the mail the USPO is holding for me:)
I flew into Denver, and my son picked me up at the airport. Before heading into the mountains leading to Vail, we made one last stop at what I consider the best "brick and mortar" baseball card shop in America. Bill's Sports Collectibles on S. Broadway.
I picked up three SP (divisible by three) hits 1948 Bowman, and if you can overlook the little bit of vintage tape, these are really nice! They were priced at $10 each (10% NM "book") before discounts.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w.../Scan%201.jpeg
I took this photo on my morning "power walk" in their new neighborhood in Napa California. Using my iPhone and it is not photoshopped it is SO beautiful there!

Samsdaddy 02-14-2016 02:29 PM

Whoa, very nice Larry. Talking about the picture from your son's neighborhood. :)

The cards are not bad either.

LuckyLarry 02-16-2016 09:30 AM

I was going to say I was "chomping at the bit" to get to the Post Office this morning, but the Urban Dictionary says the correct usage is "champing at the bit"?
The USPO has been holding my mail for nearly a month, and here are the football cards that were waiting for me.
The most "expensive" in this group are two of the 1948 Bowmans #26 Bob Waterfield (RC) and #36 Bulldog Turner (RC SP) each "valued" in NM at $275.
Only two more cards remain until I complete my 1948 Bowman set #99 Harry Gilmer (RC SP), and #108 Buford Ray (RC SP and the last card in the set).

LuckyLarry 02-16-2016 10:21 AM

And after the long "Presidents Day" holiday, this is what my mail carrier had for me today. A pair of hits 1950 Bowman, three hits 1952 Bowman small, 1972 Topps hi number Ron Yary, and finally 1962 Topps #17 Mike Ditka (RC). Only one card left to complete my 1962 Topps set, I still need #36 Ernie Davis (RC).
Looks like I get to spend my day playing with cardboard:D

Tough to keep up with Larry, great pick-ups! Really like the Ditka :)

Here's a Washington State Normal School Football Program between WWU("B") and CWU ("E"). It was the dedication game of Bellingham's Waldo Field, November 16, 1923.

The players pictured are team captains Richard Bruland (WWU) and Gerald Brunson (CWU). Not much to report on these two, Brunson was killed in a workplace accident as an electrician in 1926.

nice one. that's probably what the ball looked like that they played with i'm assuming.

The cover and back of the program are such heavy bond paper that it almost feels like the leather of a football. It's a very odd program. The 12,000 fans that reportedly went to this game, would be more than years of attendance for either of these colleges. If I found another pre-Depression era program from CWU I'd be amazed.

LuckyLarry 02-18-2016 10:11 AM

The card posted by SilverBall67 and the program posted by Ty really do show the odd shape of the old footballs. Does this style of ball have a name? I can't imagine throwing that thing!

One eBay purchase arrived today. 1952 Bowman large #39 Emlen Tunnell. Of course I enjoy putting these sets together, but I know nothing about the players pictured including Emlen until I read about him on the internet. Card "books" for $125 in NM shape and I won this one for $13.33 delivered.
1. First African American to play for the NY Giants (1948)
2. Pro Football HOF 1967 the first African American inducted
3. Suffered a broken neck playing in college, so severe that he was rejected by both the Army and Navy during WWII (he did serve in the Coast Guard)
4. Undrafted out of college, he hitchhiked to New York to ask for a try out.
5. Died of a heart attack in 1975 on the football field while acting as an assistant coach with the Giants.

John I tried to watch that video but after viewing the commercial it said the video wasn't available. Do I have to be a member of NFL.com?

takes me straight in after the commercial. i'm not signed in at nfl.com... maybe you're missing a video codec or some'n? not sure

Nice Video

TanksAndSpartans 02-18-2016 03:02 PM

I don't have an NFL Videos account. Try to enter from a Google search rather than my link. You can search: "Emlen Tunnell Films Encore". There's a really similar short on my NFL Top 100 DVD - they did a nice job considering its only about 3 minutes or so.

LuckyLarry 02-19-2016 04:03 AM

OK the video played fine on my desktop, it wouldn't play using my phone. Thanks for the link I enjoyed it!

couple of additions to my '57 set.. other than a few rookies in '57..I believe the '72 set is going to be tougher to put together as far as cost.. and a lot of people seem to be jumping all over these auctions.

I finally figured out how to shrink these images...

jefferyepayne 02-20-2016 06:59 AM

Great pickups, everybody.

Love the '57 Topps set. Did anyone pick up the original art for one of these cards that came up for auction recently? Always wanted to snag one of those.

Emlen Tunnell was awesome! His rookie card was the first HOF rookie card I bought as a kid. Nice card, Larry.

Love all the other Bowman's too.

Here's a 53 Bowman of Doak Walker. I've noticed that most of his cards are good looking cards.

Nice pick up on the 1959 Topps Football cards. A nice set that won't break the bank.

pariah1107 02-23-2016 06:52 PM

Nice group of '57's Shawn! Sweet Gifford.

sockwell123 02-23-2016 08:41 PM

Thanks. I think i'm downhill on the '57 set.. But still working my way uphill on the 72's.

DBesse27 02-23-2016 10:05 PM

1957 Topps is probably my favorite football set of all time.

LuckyLarry 02-29-2016 05:47 PM

Nice load of eBay purchases in my mailbox this afternoon:D Still "chipping" away at my early Bowman sets, and finally completed 1970 Topps Supers with this Butkus. I had viewed the Butkus listing earlier in the week, and then eBay sent me a message that the price had been cut in half to $3.75 plus .79c to ship. So I bought it!

Wow, Jeff - a 1925 Bears season ticket - nice!

Kin, great blogging - I really liked the 48 Leaf Doak Walker - everything was really nice except the corners which is the least important condition factor to me and on 48 Leaf is sometimes preferabble.

Beansballcardblog 03-02-2016 09:59 AM

These were a couple different pick-ups, I had to put them under glass. The WSNS of Ellensburg Pennant and School Newspaper article came from a 1923 scrap album, and the WSNS of Ellensburg "E" Football Program all refer to the same game; November 16, 1923 Dedication Game for Bellingham's Waldo Field. Though not in the greatest condition, an amazing coincidence, and happy addition to the local sports collection.

At the top of each Thread is a menu called "Thread Tools". I believe under there you can subscribe to the thread and then every time someone posts to it you will get an email. Haven't used it myself but think it works that way.

I picked up these two cards at our local show today. The 1948 Bowman #99 Harry Gilmer SP RC "books" NM $200 purchase price was $18. I only need one card to complete my 1948 Bowman set!

LuckyLarry 03-05-2016 12:44 PM

I wasn't even going to post about this additional purchase I made today, but little did I know I was in for a great surprise:D
After I purchased the 1948 Bowman #99 card, the dealer said he had a stack of off condition 1948 Bowman football cards available. As he handed them over, he said they included some of the SP cards. After I quickly thumbed through them I asked how much for all of them. There were 41 different cards and he said $82 or $2 each.
I thought it was a pretty good deal, and of course I can always use some upgrades, so I bought them. I just now went through them, and there are 11 of the SPs (divisible by 3):
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/IMG_3152.jpg
And wouldn't you know it, one of the SPs was the last card I needed to complete my set #108 Buford Ray SP RC and the last card in the set! There is a slight amount of paper loss and a crease around the number so it is difficult to read. This card "books" NM $400 so $2 is 0.5% book, my kind of deal!

Great story Larry! I haven't been to a dealer/card shop since I was a kid. In the back of SCD, it lists shows in my area, but I assume they will be baseball heavy, maybe someday I will check out. With 48 Bowman done... I saw the 48 Leaf Lujack - are you going to try for that set? Getting deals on those high numbers would be a pretty good chalenge.

jefferyepayne 03-06-2016 04:28 AM

Good stuff, Larry, and congrats on finishing 48 Bowman! That set grows on you over time.

John Actually it's a 1949 Lujack:DI am now collecting both the '48 and '49 Leaf sets when does it end LOL! I haven't taken the bait on the 1935 National Chicle set yet but I imagine it won't be long.
I get to 12-15 card shows a year and there is always plenty of football. I've been known to drive three or four hours for a card show, and have attended the National the last four years (via air travel). You should give it a shot!

Those Bowmans are great and I think the fact that they are b&w helps them not show their age even with some toning.
