Nostalgia and Mattingly
I returned to the world of cards in March. I started with vintage HOF players, then pivoted to the entire reason I got back into cards - Don Mattingly.
I was 12 when I saw my first 1984 Donruss Mattingly and was never able to afford it, so in March 2020 I bought all three of his rookie cards. I've decided that was so much fun I'm going back to focus on just Mattingly cards, so I'm buying any card that looks interesting and preferably in a PSA case. That set registry sure is addictive! Here are some of my favorite recent pickups because food issue Mattingly cards REALLY take me back to being a kid! ...and that's why I'm collecting again - to feel like a kid!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fab05f8716.jpg Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk |
I love Donnie Baseball too. And what's even better about him is that he's a great guy. One of the most gracious signers at spring training every time I go. I was able to get my rookie signed last time I took a trip to Florida:

You're off to a good start. I have tons of Mattingly in my Yankees collection, I like the 1984 Nestle and Topps Tiffany rookies.
The toughest in the 80's to me are the 88 and 89 Topps Mets/Yankees Doubleheaders test and the 1989 Topps Heads up test. |

I've got a 1990 Heads-Up, but never even heard of the 1989 test. I'll have to do some research. I love the obscure releases - really emphasizes the thrill of the chase. The Double-header tests were Yankees one side/Mets the other? I've seen the 1990 Matting Double-header, but haven't pulled the trigger on on yet. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk |

I've got lots of obscure Mattingly's that aren't listed in Beckett, if you want to discuss further you can DM. I'm not selling them, they are just for awareness. |

Great looking cards all - thanks for posting! 12 year old me would've died seeing a Mattingly on top of the pack in the store. I only got to buy cards at the drugstore down the street, so while my memory is fuzzy I do remember there was a horrible selection.
Quick question: What's the story behind the World of Baseball card? I've never seen one of those. |

Someone who knows exactly may chime in, but I had one at one time.
Not sure how I got it even, but traded it to a Yankee collector friend. I believe it was some sort of promotional item, that might have come with something else, like a book, game, promotional appearance or something like that. I also recall it being in the annual Beckett or Krause Almanac at one time and that might have more info. In fact, I'll go check for that now because my curiosity is piqued now. Quote:
