Most undervalued T206 Hall of Famer?

My vote has to go to Addie Joss (hands at chest). A couple of recent SGC 84's have sold for under $1k, and a PSA 7 sold for around the same figure. This guy was one of the greatest pitchers of all time, and his portrait card brings alot of money. Anyone have thoughts on others?

Pythonfactory 12-12-2012 01:45 PM

Sssh. Don't bring that card up! It is near the top of my "to be acquired list" since it is indeed cheap for a T206 HOF and it is one of my favorite poses in the set (with hat tipped up, old style glove, and looking like he is about to kill a hitter).

I'm surprised Elmer Flick goes so cheap. It's not like there are a ton of options available for him and he only has one card in the set. The other part is almost everything else for him is a portrait shot, so if you want a non-portrait, which I prefer, this is basically it

As I note on another thread just now, ESPN is ranking greatest players ever, and places Eddie Collins ahead of Nap Lajoie--which certainly is not true in card pricing....

You have all seen it before, but my Rube Waddell came in at a silly price :D

No way Collins was a better player than Lajoie. I don't get that at all......

I think Chesboro is a good candidate.

I agree, that's why I was thrilled to win this one up a couple of weeks ago:

Don't know about HOF player, but I think the following HOF'er cards are undervalued. Also, maybe it's my imagination, but seems like the Matty and Johnson portraits haven't gone up in value near as much over the last ten years, as other 'big names'.

Johnson/glove at chest
Young/both non-portrait

As for underrated players, I vote for Zack Wheat.

I should have posted this over here instead of troubling the E95 thread, but in my mind the most underrated HOFer is undoubtedly Nap Lajoie. He sells for far less than Cobb, Matthewson, et al, but he statistics show that his performance is roughly in line with theirs.

WAR rating:
Cy Young 162
Cobb 145
Johnson 145
Wagner 126
Lajoie 102
Matthewson 91

Meanwhile, Lajoie cards sell for range closer to that of a run-of-the-mill HOFer, in spite of the fact that he was (rightfully) considered a superstar in the day. Here's how his WAR rating compares to other HOFers, including fellow 2b man, Jhonny Evers.

Lajoie 102
Wheat 57
Keeler 50
Flick 50
Evers 44
Joss 43

As you can see, Lajoie is twice as good as those guys, but his cards sell for more or less the same price.

I also think the HOF'ers with only one pose are underrated. Not sure if I can really say the Plank is underrated considering its price, but it is at least underrated compared to the Wagner. Unfortunately, he will always be forced to play second fiddle to Wags. People tend to forget just how good Plank was in his own right.

Because of there being a "Cy Young" award I have always thought this card is undervalued. (shown many times before but still..)

Honestly, it depends on the Lajoie Pose. Recently, his prices for graded cards such as 3's and 4's have skyrocketed. For some reason though, you can almost always find his raw card, in like 2-3 condition from $120-$175. Somewhere in that price range.

I also feel like Keeler is underrated. I mean his card, in a 3 or a 4 sells for a pretty penny, no doubt. But I mean, the man hit over .300 for 16 seasons, lifetime .341 batting average. I find that pretty impressive.

i agree on joss ... his story is quite special

Beauty, Leon. Tough day at the grading store.

Partial Rube

Wow. That Rube looks like the perfect puzzle piece to a big T206 puzzle!

I always thought Sam Crawford's cards went for a lot cheaper than they should.

Pat R 12-13-2012 05:59 AM

Wow that is a nice 2 Leon. Is there someting I am not seeing? That card
looks like an easy 4.

Hi Pat
I think there is a wrinkle somewhere but I forget. Sometimes you get lenient grades and sometimes not. Buy the card, not the holder :). IF sold this would sell at the higher end of a 2, probably.

my vote is for joe kelley

Tyler 12-13-2012 07:51 AM

Modest back run of my favorite T206. No Red Hindu or BL 460 in this guy's future...:(
