After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: peter chao
Guys,

Let's say that you lost all your cards, your mom threw them out or whatever. You've restarted your T206 set, while your waiting for your T206 set to be completed, what other set would you start working on? And how would you go about building the other set?

Peter C.

Posted By: bigfish387t
I would try to finish one set at a time. The t206 set is so large you might not want to get side tracked. If you wanted another challenge, take on the N172 set.

Posted By: peter chao
John,

Be realistic the prices of T206s don't just keep on going up. There isn't a market in the world that goes straight up. If they did I would pull out $500,000 in equity from my house and invest in T206s.

You can buy during the slumps in the T206 prices.

In the interim which set would you be collecting?

Peter C.

After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: T206Collector
...what Peter's question is.

Is it:

"If you decided to take a break from collecting T206 because you wanted to wait for the market to come down, if you decided not to save your money for T206 cards during that period would you collect another set and if so which one?"

And if that is the question -- is it worth asking or knowing anyone's answers to this hypothetical?

I'm not trying to be mean. I really just don't get this one.

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
I'd agree with Fish's second post. I got a couple hundered cards into T206 and got bored. I still pick one up from time to time but they are so plentiful that there is no urgency. E95 is a great set and relatively easy to build. Of course, if you complete it, you'll probably want to continue on to the somewhat more difficult E96. That's what happened to me.

After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: anthony
peter, obviously there's no perfect answer to your question...but while i was putting my unfinished set of t206 together this is what i did...

1. set sights on certain cards (mini-sets like hofers, portraits, player variations, etc) and attempted to get those only at as good a price as i could find, even if that meant passing on a deal of a price on a card that wasnt on that list.

2. i went after individual cards that interested me, not necessarily a set. if i found one or two before i found a t206 on my mini-set list, then i bought it.

point is that you may spend a very long time completing your set without going through mastro, edwards, etc...or you can just go to ebay and the b/s/t and pick up every card that you need no matter the price

good luck in your search!

After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: Ray Piskadlo
I made the T206 a ten year project, started back in August of 2003. Have 205 cards as we speak. One card a week is very functional for me. Since 2003, I have also began the following:

T200... great team cards! players like Wagner, Thorpe, and Jackson that are affordable! (7 out of 16)

T209-1... with only 16 cards, I thought I could finish it in a year. It's been a year and I have 2! haha.

1914 Cracker Jacks... Just started, want 1 per month. (3 out of 144, include McGraw and Alexander)

Is it easy to get sidetracked on the T206? YES! And I pretty much have all of my bases covered with a team set, minor league set, and a caramel set. But, if you stay focused, it can be done!

BTW, once I finish the T206 in 2013, I am contemplating the N172 set for the next ten years of my life.

After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: James Feagin
Maybe it's because I handle so many T206 cards, but other than rare backs, autographs or printing freaks, there just isn't much there for me. With that said, I've never bought the "T206 is complete minus the Big 4 contention". You could safely state that such is a near set, but in no way is it complete or should be considered as such. I would advise beginning set collector's who are interested in T206 to go after a specific player, team or theme and branch out. There are way more cards than those 526 out there.

After You Start Your T-206 Set, Where Would You Go Next?

Posted By: Joann
Well I don't collect T206's, but I think I get the gist of the question. I collect Detroiters. For whatever reason there have been some dead times in that activity - either nothing came up that I needed, or I didn't want to spend the money on what did come up.

So I toyed with the idea of working on the E96, even to the point of buying a few non-Detroiters. (And to answer the question, it was because I love the color fades in the backgrounds - green to blue, orange to magenta, etc, and attainable with only a few dozen cards and not a lot of expensive HOF'ers). I stopped though when I realized that if I ever really wanted to complete it I would have to buy at least a handful of cards that held no interest for me either historically or aesthetically.

So then I started picking up images of female players here and there, and that really has held my interest. As the Detroiters I need (and can afford) get fewer and further between I find the other pursuit a great diversion - even to the point of taking over my focus.

Sorry if I misread the question. In my collecting, the question interprets as what set you would putz with during lulls in your primary collecting goal.

Joann

Posted By: Shanon Ping
I started doing a 14' CJ set but gave up after 20 or so cards because I realized the Jackson and Matty would probably be unatainable. I still collect individual ones. As for choice #2 I would do a T201 set. Nice HOF selections, relatively small (50 cards) and all are reasonably priced.
