Seen a Good Movie Lately?

I just watched FORD VS FERRARI (2019). My son is a race car fan, and this was recommended to us. My son was glued to the TV.

If you want a mature movie that is plot driven, watch WHIPLASH (2014) starring Miles Teller. It's about a late teen boy who wants to be a famous drummer and the cut throat world he enters to gain recognition. It gave my wife anxiety. She said she knows people like the antagonist. But warning, it's got foul language.

"Whiplash" was great.

Best movie I've seen recently is "Banshees of Inisherin".

If you like character studies, gruff Irish lingo, and the caustic chemistry between Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason...then you'll like this one. If you don't care for any of those things...you won't like this one. ;)

Not as fun and a lot more serious then "In Bruges", but still pretty good.

Will gladly recommend some movies to everyone.

The Pianist with Adrien Brody was excellent. It's a bit of a heavy watch, surrounding a Jewish Pianist attempting to escape the Nazi Regime in Germany.

Trumbo starring Bryan Cranston, about Dalton Trumbo and the group of Hollywood writers/producers that were blackballed because of the Red Scare in the United States. Absolutely stellar cast, does a great job of capturing that old Hollywood feel.

And if you wouldn't remind me recommending a documentary, I would strongly recommend, Sound City, especially if you are a big fan of Late 70's/Early 80's classic rock. It's all about this one recording studio that had the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon, record there.

Actually, I found Renfield to be pretty amusing.

I'll recommend two series found on Netflix.

"Black Mirror" and "Criminal" both series with great storytelling.

Would also recommend "Flag Day" with Sean Penn and his daughter Dylan who does a fantastic job of acting.

I just accompanied my daughter to see "The Flas" - not my cup of tea but she enjoyed it.

I stumbled across a great movie, "Breaking", a true story that is a great watch.

"Based on the 2017 real-life story of the late Brian Brown-Easley, a decorated Marine Corps veteran in dire financial straits resulting from systemic failure. Easley is concerned over the effects of this on his daughter alongside the prospects of homelessness to the point of threatening to blow up a Wells Fargo bank unless he receives payment he is owed from the Department of Veterans Affairs."

This should be on your "must watch" list.

Enjoyed that one very much. Even more serious is another Gleason film, Calvary. He's just a terrific actor.

The Verdict with Paul Newman is back on Max. I believe it's his best role. His courtroom summation is one of the best pieces of acting prowess you'll ever see.

Yup, saw Calvary awhile back. Gleason is fantastic as usual.

Speaking of Paul Newman. Saw Cool Hand Luke recently. Hadn’t seen it in decades. Great performance in that one.

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, will forever be one of my favorite Paul Newman performances. To be honest though, it's hard to find a bad performance by the man.

The Hustler and its sequel, The Color of Money, are two other great ones.

As far as new movies, if you like Wes Anderson, Asteroid City is a great film and is currently in theaters.

Ben Stiller is a national treasure. His fat camp movie HEAVYWEIGHTS made for an entire generation of kids who adore him and his comedic style.

A movie I can occasionally quote is Major Payne. "Do I need to tell you the story of the little engine that could, again?" My wife will quote, "Johnny, I can't feel my legs! Charlie, you ain't got any legs!"

I have not seen or heard about The Verdict. But I have seen Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy. My dad always talked about The Hustler.

Tonight my wife said she never seen Butch Cassidy and would like too.

My mom recently asked me if I knew the title of his racing movie, but I haven't a clue.

re: Butch Cassidy... just coincidentally we were out last night at a restaurant that has some Bolivian items on their menu which led to a round of some funny quotes from the movie.

Oh, watch The Verdict. You have my money back guarantee on it. Newman was nominated for best Actor but lost to Ben Kingsley for Gandhi. Newman was robbed. The tried to make up for it the next year by giving him BA for The Color Of Money but his performance in that doesn't hold a candle to his work in The Verdict.

BTW..his racing movie is Winning which is also the name of the documentary centering on his long involvement with racing. Both are worth watching.

stlcardsfan 06-30-2023 08:55 AM

The Verdict is an awesome movie. In my top 10 for sure. Newman, Jack Warden, James Mason are all superb. Even the Irish judge is good.

Tim, I took my son and I to see FORD VS. FERRARI when it was in theaters. We absolutely loved it; it was a special "father and son outing"! We're both race fans from a long time back. I was only 10 when that "war" began in earnest in 1964, but I avidly followed it via the three US sports car magazines. I'm so happy you and your son got to see it.

Also, on YOUTUBE there's a very meaningful and relevant documentary about Ford vs. Ferrari, not the movie but the story. I would wholeheartedly recommend this to you and your son, Tim. It's entitled "THE 24 HOUR WAR". It was produced when several of the main people involved were still alive and lucid. It's a combo of excellent interviews and race footage. I think it's just shy of 100 minutes long, and worth every second. Please pop some popcorn and give it a watch.:D --- Brian Powell

Now that I've gotten firmly into my "crotchety old man" phase, I have to say that I have been pretty disappointed with recent movies. However a couple that were pleasant surprises:

AIR - the new Amazon Prime movie about MJ and Nike is very, very good. Damon and Affleck are great together as always and the rest of the cast is excellent.

If you are a fan of brainy sci-fi ARRIVAL is back on free Prime Video. My favorite genre and that one is one of the best, if not the best of the last decade. Not one if you like shootouts with the aliens.

So you want a movie recommendation...

How about a movie that has a cast that includes all of these people:

Milton Berle
Mickey Rooney
Spencer Tracy
Ethel Merman
Jonathan Winters
Sid Caesar
Buddy Hackett
Carl Reiner
Phil Silvers
Don Knotts
The 3 Stooges
Jack Benny
Jimmy Durante
Jim Backus
William Demarest
Jesse White
Norman Fell
Peter Falk
Buster Keaton
Jerry Lewis
Joe E Brown
Sterling Holloway

and others...

Yep, such a movie does exist.

Yep, a terrible oversight on my part to have left out Terry Thomas...especially in light of the fact that when I was a child a boy in my neighborhood had the same name and became a successful local businessman.

Past Lives, a small quiet movie with an all Korean cast, is fantastic.

brian1961 07-05-2023 05:00 PM

I'm sure many other actors and actresses have not been mentioned in that MAD, MAD movie, but I'd like to mention several others.

Edie Adams---she played the loving, fearful wife of Sid Caesar very well. She needed the work, after first suffering terribly from the loss of her husband, Ernie Kovacs, and then all the financial and custody mess that continued / came afterwards.

Zazu Pitts---her last appearance

Dorothy Provine---gorgeous, and would later feature well in the original Disney classic, THAT DARNED CAT!

Marvin Kaplan --- Irwin at the gas station, but better known to me as the voice of Choo Choo, from Hanna-Barbara's TOP CAT

-----whoever that kid was who told Phil Silvers he knew "a short cut", and would have none of Phil's typically cheapskate pocket change offer for the right way. Didn't he say, "NO, I WANT THREE DOLLARS!"

I faintly remember going with my whole family to the theater to see this great film. I was nine. Being with all my family was super special, since my dear Dad was frequently so busy at NBC.

Thank you for stirring up old, happy memories. --Brian Powell

Lets not forget:

Selma Diamond - Bailiff on Night Court
Edward Everett Horton- Narrator of Bullwinkle's fractured fairy tales
Leo Gorcy - Bowry Boys fame.

A fine list, David Mamet stories tend to make great movies. Love all Paul Newman Movies. I dont know how the Sting didn't make this list yet.
When I was young I would travel with my Grandfather. Road trips mostly to visit relatives. 3 summers in a row we went to local Drive ins in three differant States, to catch a Movie. And All three years The Sting was playing. It was just as much fun the third year as the first.

Friends of Eddie Coyle is definitely worth watching.
Good Bad and Ugly the crown jewel of spaghetti westerns
And original Producers Movie Gene Wilder Zero Mostel.

Only recall two "recent" movies. Ever since our now 2 1/2 year old daughter was born, we've fallen very far behind on anything. Just last night finally got to finish the last season of Cobra Kai.

The Pope's Exorcist was one I was looking forward to. I love that genre of horror movies that get into your head and not the "horror" movies that revolve around blood and gore or go for the quick little scare that might make you jump a little. This movie started out showing promise in my opinion, then I felt like the last 20-30 minutes were essentially "Let's wrap this thing up" and got ridiculous.

It's a couple of years old but we also watched The Black Phone. Really enjoyed that movie.

Black Phone was certainly one of the better horror movies I’ve seen in the last year or two.

Not Stephen King written, but it felt like a really good Stephen King adaptation. Lots of similar themes that are in his stories.

Joe Hill, who wrote the original story, is Stephen King’s son so that makes sense.

Rumors of a sequel/franchise. Not sure how I feel about that.

Interesting. Didn't know it was King's son that wrote it. Makes perfect sense.

I would root against a sequel/franchise. Not a concept I want to see overdone to death.

Man With the Golden Arm, Manchurian Candidate ( Sinatra)
Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Harder They Fall, ( Bogart)
2001 Space Oddessy, Blade Runner, The Hitcher(Rutgar Hauer)
Requiem For a Heavyweight
The Hustler, Young Philadelphians, Giant, From here to Eternity

How about a movie with Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy...and in the style of a classic Hitchcock movie...and it's every bit as good.

Check out the 1963 film Charade.
