Thoughts on SGC Grading

4 Attachment(s)
This to the group. I have a graded E78 James J. Corbett card and reverse. I found the same exact card on Ebay a few weeks ago...and it was graded .5 higher than mine. I sent the scans of both cards to SGC to see about the issue with the 2.5 card. They wanted me to resend my 2.0 card and pay for a re-grading of the card. Seriously, why even bother getting a card graded if the grade is worthless. Please send your thoughts. If anyone is interested in the SGC 2 which I own, make me an offer. I have it for sale. Thanks

If there is one thing we have all learned about grading, it's often wrong, and seldom fair. Obviously, SGC low balled the grade on that card. It has a crease, but it's got great eye appeal. It doesn't sound like they are offering a free regrade, so I guess you're stuck with that grade at the moment. Sorry that happened to you.

Sell it as-is with very high resolution proper scans; the superior eye appeal of the card would generate a strong result. Let someone else chase a regrade. If the scans reflect the quality, the buyers will know it.

The 2.5 is overgraded and I am guessing its sale price will (did?) reflect it. If I sent in that card it would get a 1.5.

There are not many industries that perform their services as poirly as these grading companies. Terrible controls resulting in inconsistent results. Not to mention a pay to play mentality. Bust it out and provide quality scans and measurements and it will get attention for it's eye appeal.

That's disappointing. I just sent cards to SGC, the first ones I've ever decided to grade.

Thanks for the replies.

Well Thank you to the above commentaries. I agree with your sentiment. Any offers on the card, the 2.0 SGC one shown above. Thanks David

I'm not in the market for e78's because I'm working on a few sets at the moment but you should list it on the bst under "everything else". Good luck.

I think the 2.5 is overgraded, but the 2 is correct. There is a fairly heavy crease running all the way across the card around his knees, it appears, that branches into 2 creases. To me, a light crease or wrinkle, a little pen mark on back, some stains, round corners, that's a Very Good. Good has corners that are pretty bad, or a 'full' crease like this, or other kinds of heavier damage that keep the card complete and not fragile.

Fair has a missing corner, a pin hole, something missing, the creasing or damage is heavy and repeated. Poor = the structural integrity of the card is threatened or a huge chunk is missing, or the card is heavily altered.

VG-EX = no crease, maybe a slight wrinkle.

Excellent = no creasing or wrinkling whatsoever, no more than small staining from the original product packaged with only, corners that are close to sharp. AKA not a card in my collection

Near Mint = Mint, except a slight flaw on close examination.

Mint = perfect, exceptionally rare in any set.

Gem Mint = something made up by people to make more money.

Pristine = Gem Mint worked, so let's do it again. Set up the money counter.

Pristine+ = Coming 2022

Grading is an opinion from a non regulated service that has no one to answer too, so what they say goes unfortunately anybody can do the grading from amateurs to so called experts and can be bias towards the ones who spend the most

Stain

Grading is a technical art that does not necessarily reflect the overall eye appeal of a card -- nor does it claim to be. Case in point a mint card with a tiny pinhole. In this case the 2 looks like it has water stain on top right portion of card and such a card has a ceiling of a 2. In short, people misunderstand grading as a "which card cumulatively looks better" which is not how the grading scale is set up to be.

Grading is an opinion by ones observation not an art

Grading is like a pretty flower that smells bad.

Grading is like pornography: I can't define it but I know it when i see it.

Grading is the art of looking at a card, assessing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong opinion to it.

Grading is the worst possible system of analyzing a card, except for all others.

There is no native American criminal element except card graders.

You know what you have with 50 card graders buried up to their necks in sand? Not enough sand.

Thanks, you've been a great audience. Enjoy Whitesnake.

Not bad. I giggled out loud at a few for real.

3's and 4's are allowed to have a crease. with 4 sharp corners and great centering not sure how that is not at least a 3. these cards need to be 2 full grades apart, so I am thinking 1.5 and 3.5.

PSA vs SGC for tobaccos

cut

BruinsFan 10-14-2020 07:25 PM

I agree with your assesment...it seemed to be under graded and SGC wants more money to have it resubmitted? Screw that! Better start using a computer to analyze cards in the future with set standards with photo imagery. Thanks
