You guys are the smart ones. I'd bet anyone, that you guys could go thru the entire 1st Series cards (80 pairs),
and tell us which colors the backs are printed with, without flipping over the cards.

Is this from a display for the 1952 Topps cards or something else? Are there other cards with backs like this one?

I'll answer for, Al, since I'm here, and tell you this is a salesman copy, which, of course, is/are fairly rare.

Thanks. I had not seen them before, but I haven't been looking for any 52 Topps cards for quite a while. Any idea how many different cards there are that were issued as a salesman copy?

ALR-bishop 01-21-2021 01:18 PM

I have a 3 card, consecutively numbered, but cut panel I can post when we get to those cards. I think Anthony may have an uncut panel that I can ask him to post. I try for a Salesman Sample and unopened pack for each set. I think the Salesman Samples for Topps run 52-67

The PSA Registry lists 491 cards in a 1952 Master set and 550 in a Super set. The additional cards involve hobby recognized variations front or back, and the Super set include the rare "Canadian" gray backs 131-180.

In 2013 Huggins and Scott auctioned what they called a Super set ay 579 cards. The additional cards were mostly recurring print defects. A check list of that set is in the link below. It includes a Rosen variant beyond the red and black backs, as the black back can be found with or without a pink slash around the cap. Jeff actually posted one of the pink slash versions above.

Here's my Rosen. One of the first few 52s I picked up when I started working on my low # run many years ago. Looks like it might be one of the pink slashers (never heard of that so-called variation til now so thanks for that info ALR).

It's players like this that I know make some people reluctant to collect complete sets. Why spend money for a card of someone you have likely never heard of? However, it's something I always found interesting. When I was working on my run of Topps sets, there were many players from the 50s and 60s I never heard of who I found in 5 or more sets so they had to have been decent players to make it in the majors for that long (especially when there were only 20 teams) even if they never became household names.

What I have found, just like what you have said above, is that some players, although not HOF's, were/are fan/team favorites.
While amassing my 52's, on many occasions, I'd come across a card/player who seemed to command a premium over another player so that got me researching as to why? Outside of the hard to find centered copies, variations, etc, it was fun to find out some of these players had real good careers and/or had some baseball history to them that I never knew about.
That is a side to the collecting, outside of thinking only about the ROI, etc, that makes collecting so much fun.

The one card where that really stood out for me was a 1968 Joe Sparma. When I started working on the 1968 set many years ago, he was listed in the Beckett price guide along with the other stars and minor stars. I had never heard of him so I asked a dealer I was friendly with why. His response - he's a 1968 Tiger and they are very popular since they won the World Series so his card has a premium to it.

That's true about most of my set. I remember when I was working on it, I was fine with anything as long as there wasn't part of another card showing.

Pesky and Hermanski are about as o/c as I go on the front but I do have a couple of cards with miscut backs. Most of my worst o/c cards are ungraded, being from the early days of building my 1-310 run. While I tend to look for good centering on stuff I buy now, these don't bother me a bit because I have the nostalgia of where, when, and from whom I got them since they were mostly obtained at shows or shops.

More recent additions are less personal, as they came from online auctions or ebay but are graded and better centered too. About 1/4 of my 52s are slabbed and average 5.5 (none with o/c qualifiers).

LincolnVT 01-28-2021 10:19 AM

52 Topps

I too have a large condition range in my 1952 Topps cards. I was handed down about half of the set this year when a very dear friend / father figure of mine passed away unexpectedly. He loved baseball and cards as a young boy...and got me in to collecting. I have pledged to complete the set in his honor as he loved his 52 cards the most. For that reason, my set will always include his cards reguardless of condition.

I completed my set before grading was as prevalent as it is today so none of the cards in it were ever graded. However, I can guarantee none of them would get close to a 5.5.
