Topps Super
Recently got hooked on these clickity-clackity cards and am wondering how to best store them. Also, any other neat info./favorite cads from the short-lived Topps Super series would be appreciated. Why did the go belly-up?

Topps Baseball Supers
1969 ? 1970 ? 1971 ? Some ? All ? None ? I have those 3 sets
|
Very Nice
I'm a fan of all 3.

I've been sporadically collecting the 1971s. Great images. Grossly underpriced IMO for all but the biggest stars. I picked up commons for a buck and HOFers for $2-$5 at the National this year.

71's are much harder than the 70's. You always see large stacks of the latter at shows but the stack of 71's is always much smaller.
Now, can someone confirm all those 69's with water damage were salvage from the infamous Card Collector's Co. fire years ago? |
Topps Supers
Also have an unopened 70 and 71 pack and a Topps Vault Gibson proof ( sqaured, not rounded). No 69 pack. I have always liked the Supers for the great pictures. I also have the 64s and the white and gray back 80s. Thinner stock, but still great pictures.
The 69s were by far the toughest, and 69 was a great year for test/inserts in general with the Decals, Deckles, Stamps, 4 on 1s, Team Posters and the illustrious Topps Bowie Kuhn card |
1970 Topps Super
I have two Yaz and two Santo cards. one is larger in size and lighter in color then the the others. The lighter Yaz has like a orange dot in the upper left corner and a blue dot on his sleeve. Were there two printing of these cards? The lighter cards have been mistreated. Thanks D.

Interesting about the 69 Supers and the fire. I have a Gibson, Flood, and McCarver, and I know my Gibson has very minor water damage. Can't remember about the Flood and McCarver. I think my Gibson cam from a PSA 6 holder. It now resides in one of my team set albums.

I just picked up a 1970 test issue to go with regular issue one. Loul

Dave; I think you are correct about the fire
If you check the old CCC ads; they ran some "fire sales" after the fire occured. That should give you the final answer to your question

Stargell
Cool Stargell, he looks like a big baby face in that photo :)

I was looking through some of my first posts here and saw the story about the 1969 Topps supers and some of them possibly being rescued from a fire and water damage. Has someone confirmed that story? I still have my Cardinals team set and I remember my Bob Gibson having some water damage.

I love the Supers, especially the 1969. These have doubled in value in the last 10 years. I am in search of a 1969 Rich Allen in a PSA 8,9,or 10 holder.
I have a handful of graded 69s if anyone is looking for anything special. The 69 Supers are in alphabetical order by team city with 3 players from each team. The McNally,Rojas and Allen card gave me trouble. Not sure why. |

The 69 Super set is my 2nd favorite Topps set. I am not a graded collector but ended up with several of these graded as purchased, including a Mantle PSA 9 ST, which might be related to that issue
I also have a straight PSA 10 Rose and straight 9s of Mays, Allen, F Robinson, Horton, McClain and Stottlemeir , and a Clemente 8, and a Tiant GAI 10. All bought many, many years ago. Several other 8s but many ungraded. |
Neat article! I was 1 year old in 1976!
Here are my 1969 Topps Supers. It wasn't Gibson that had water damage...it was McCarver. <a href="https://postimg.cc/vxQ8ZPkf" target="_blank"><img src="https://i.postimg.cc/GtD4zVj7/20210805_181011.jpg" alt="20210805_181011"/></a> <a href="https://postimg.cc/YGNqkcnt" target="_blank"><img src="https://i.postimg.cc/cH2KR0ft/20210805_181140.jpg" alt="20210805_181140"/></a> |

Mine 1970 with stats

I love the notion that poor condition cards were valued at 50% of mintish cards. Imagine if a PSA 1 ‘52 Topps Mantle was half the cost of a PSA 8.
