August Pickups

A nice pickup for me is this pin on the left, it complements the pin on the right. Very hard to find I believe it was for the 1907 or 1908 world series. As Hughie Jennings was the manager and this was his battle cry!

Couple August Additions

Wow once again a fast summer. Couple minor additions to the collection. 1`st being a St Mary`s Industrial School band postcard. Have 4 now but really like this one because it`s the 1`st with a pre printed note from the school`s administration on the back. The second another one of my collecting interests, type 1 photo related to the 1919 Black Sox(Kerr/McMullin/Lynn) taken just a week before the famous world series.

picked this up at National Show and thought the best way to protect and display it is to frame it
April 14, 1921 Mid Week Publication with Ruth Cover

Lordstan 08-06-2022 07:15 PM

My recent pickups.
The first 4 are from the National.
1) Plaque that hung in the Ted Williams museum until it closed.
2) Type 1 of the all star team from the 1931 trip to Japan.
3) 1937 photo. I think it could be a type 1, but is most likely a type 2. I had a few experienced photo people look at it and they were not sure.
4)Modern Plate.

5)1942 magazine
6) May 9, 1938 type 1 photo from the recent Henry Yee auctions.
7) 1932 WS with Cuyler at first base
8) Lou being tagged out at second by Bill Jurges. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7d9abf8768.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bf308ccce0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...04a7d9030e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8d9d41e4e2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5bdaff3673.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2f2bc63e28.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ccc70e13fb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bd84e1f485.jpg

I just picked up two Holy Grails from my want list in one week. The first is a 1952 game used St. Louis Browns cap — likely worn by Jim Delsing — and the second is a 1952-53 Browns postcard signed by Satchel. Go Brownies!

Chris Counts 08-10-2022 07:31 PM

Al, I was very much tempted by that orange Tigers pin when I saw it listed recently. It's a real beauty. Hughie Jennings is one of my favorites — just in case you've never seen it, here's actual footage of him doing his famous dance in the third base box. It's 43 seconds in ...

Thanks Chris! I was a little surprised it didnt go higher! (But it would have cost somebody):D:D Nice to see you did a deal with Scott G. I have the Blackwell and if I did have another it would have gone to Scott... Glad he got one! And remember Im still in the market for the others we talked about! ;);)

bgar3 08-11-2022 09:07 AM

I wonder if Dehsing wore that hat when he pinch ran for Eddie Gaedel? Nice.

Chris Counts 08-11-2022 07:05 PM

I would love for this cap to be the one Delsing wore when he ran for Gaedel, but that happened in 1951, and this style cap was only worn in '52 and '53.

Whenever the cap was worn, it is immensely cool to have a real life Browns cap.

these lighters were available at the concession stands at Jarry Park and through mail order from the Expos yearbooks in the early 70's, not many have survive

Thanks Gary I am glad to keep it in the Net54 family.

This Is in my personal collection for the long term unless I get a chance to get a special bucket list type card that I would have to raise money to get

Latest pickup: Game used base from 1980 season given to Omar Moreno to celebrate his 3rd time breaking the Pirates single season stolen base record. This was from Moreno’s personal collection.

Very cool!!

Here's a low end pickup for me...a little tray with SF landmarks. I liked it because the "stole" the Candlestick Park picture from a ubiquitous 1960's postcard.

Scorecard from the first year of the National League, 1876. The game features Chicago and Boston. Notice the different color schemes under each Chicago player's name. These were the cap color(s) of each player that were used to identify the player. This was the idea of Albert Spalding, Chicago's player/captain. The cap idea was abandoned later in the season when the team went to solid blue caps.

Gary - that is a very cool scorecard. congrats.

I picked this up in the most recent REA. I was right on the verge of not bidding, but boy am I glad I did.

I like large sized stuff, this one is 33 x 21 inches visible dimensions, and amazing beyond description in person.

No idea where I'm going to put it though, hahaha.

Doug

Finally landed my white whale. I’ve been after this cabinet for years and the timing and funds were finally in tune. Great team that went 90-25. Most of the players were in the Old Judge set and I’m going to try for those cards too.

Wow. That is spectacular and pretty rare I imagine. Congrats.

Thanks Mark! I’m a real happy camper right now. Yes it’s very rare. There’s two versions of this team known one being a horizontal version. This is the best of the two though.

Bill Rayburn 08-26-2022 04:17 PM

Some really great pick ups this month, congratulations to all. Garry…love the program. I was aware of the different color jersey’s to differentiate positions but this is the first time I was aware of the cap color difference to do the same. Very interesting.

spec 08-26-2022 07:25 PM

Clint,
Fabulous acquisition! That it's permanent home is in Kansas makes it extra special. Good luck chasing down the OJs of these players. Jimmy Macullar I recognize from my days doing Boston research. He was a teammate of fellow OJ subjects John Morrill, Alex Mckinnon and Yank Robinson on a great Boston youth team.

ksfarmboy 08-27-2022 06:08 AM

Thanks Spec! I don’t think it will be too difficult finding the OJ’s, just getting them at a decent price will be the struggle. I have Gunson and Hoover already so 8-9 more to go. Bug Holliday played with the team as well but isn’t pictured so I need to get him also.

mrreality68 08-27-2022 06:51 AM

Congrats Clint on picking up your white whale

I am sure the wait was now well worth it.

Amazing piece

Wow, big congrats, Clint! That is a beautiful Cabinet, and it's great that it found its proper home. Nice score, and best of luck with the OJs.

Mark, thank you I appreciate it! Very happy to get it back to Kansas.

Jeff I seen your thread and it’s a great idea. I’ll see what my #2 white whale is now.😁. Always have to be on the lookout for something.

My latest photo a Don Wingfield from 52/53 range. What I love most is the stamp on the back of a collector not to far from me.

Actually that is the danger. As soon as I get something I should step back and enjoy but instead I am already looking to the next card, memorabilia or something. And worse is when something comes up I wanted and had not planned for.

Not sure if it is a sickness or an addiction and for me there is no cure but I like it that way.

Perfectly said! I often feel like people, myself included, want what we dont have and once we get it alot of the excitement is gone. Rinse and repeat.
