Tell us which lesser-known 1960's cards to have graded...
 

It looks like Bobby's kicking off another group sub for cards from the 1960's (holy heck, the end of that decade was over a half century ago!!!), so I was hoping to get some input on cards people wouldn't think of getting graded, but have low POPs or are otherwise pretty 'valuable.'

• For instance, if you have a 1967 Topps Brooks Robinson or a Red Sox Team card, you wouldn't hesitate to submit them, but what common cards flying under the radar (assuming they come back in a high grade) from 1967 get high prices when they're sold?

• Take any year from the 60's and spill anything that could be a veritable gold mine for someone. Of course, I realize there are collectors who want to keep this info to themselves, but if you have something insightful, please post it in this thread. I would love to get this going as a continuously updated list as new low POP 'discoveries' are made (and keep an organized, updated list on the first page to help people in the future).

• To be perfectly clear, I am NOT talking about obvious things like stars, HOF'ers and such, and certainly not about 'rare' sets whose cards are valuable in their own right, but simply cards from well-known sets that you would never think of submitting.

I'll start with...

1961:
Topps #242 Hal W. Smith (a low number common) - In PSA 8 or 9 it commands huge prices between $150-200, with an 8 earlier in the year selling for a whopping $230!! Additional comments: the POP in 8 is very high, so I imagine the pricing is probably due to near-perfectly centered examples.

1966 Twins team, and Birdie Tebbets. Cho Cho Coleman too.
1968 Gates Brown and Catfish Hunter.

I'm submitting all three versions of 1960 Leaf #58 Hal Smith: regular, no team, team blacked out. I'm actually not sure why now that I see it in print.

There are dozens of cards from each year that fall into this category....albeit for varying reasons. Cards like the 61 242 and 64 103 Flood were not always tough cards, until several collectors began passionately collecting copies of these two cards...this passionate collecting drove the PSA prices up.

About 15 years ago, I finished my 62 set completely graded. I can remember buying smaller lots of PSA cards in order to complete the set.

Within a week I won two 10+/- card 62 T PSA lots. One lot had a PSA 7 323 Landrum included, this card is notoriously tough in 7 or higher due to centering. Recently (15 years later) a PSA 7 sold for nearly $70, while a PSA 6 for less than $2.

The second lot had a 62 301 Cisco PSA 8 card embedded in it...at one point an 8 of this card was selling for $300+. Greg Morris recently sold a raw NM copy of this card for $32+.

In both cases these cards individually were worth more than what I paid for each lot, otherwise I would probably still need these two cards as it would have been hard to shell out that amount for these two "common" cards.

While both of these cards are "commons" undgraded, they are anything but commons graded. What is amazing is that even with submitters knowing these cards are low pops and submitting them numerous times over the years subsequently increasing the pops, the value has stayed consistent.

I would say send in your 1966 Cash and Freehans. I can never win nice ones from Greg Morris, they always get bid up. I bid on a low grade Cash a while back but it ended up selling for $18.

Any suggestions for 1965 Topps?

Back in the 70s when I worked for a baseball card seller, one card we had problems finding in really nice shape was the 1963 Topps Mets team card #473. When we did run across one, it usually sold right away.

1965 Topps baseball #22 Charlie Smith is pricey in nice condition.Hard to find centered I have read.I would like to hear more about this card.

I agree this is a tough one from the 1965 set. It’s always OC.

I got tilt jilted (see my thread about 'Collectorisms'). After seeing the relatively dynamite centering, I pulled it out of the binder and angled it in the sun, and sure enough a wrinkle appeared hidden in his neck. Argh!!!
