Wow... i guess i am "new" to the hobby, this is the first time I have seen this t206 Wagner in the past 30+ yrs of collecting. It is in fairly "good" condition, it should get a 0.5 grade instead of "A".

already over half a million, Wagners continue to soar rapidly everytime one comes up for sale. Makes the Doyle and plank look cheap in comparison, not to mention some other rare prewar cards.

Apparently the A grade is due to the size requirement (not the card's overall condition). Taken from Hertitage's description...

"The "Authentic" designation from SGC relates to the card's failure to meet minimum size requirements."

It's short at the bottom, thus the Auth designation.

I think it’s a beautiful example and will do especially well with the joe g provenance.

Bpm0014 01-30-2021 02:13 PM

Seems like a good candidate for a soaking

Regardless of the length/shortness, would it not have received an "A" anyways due to the paper loss on the back?

Probably, but falling short of the min size criteria (as stated in the description) conclusively dispels the OP's perception that a number grade might have been warranted.

I do agree with you that the paper loss is significant enough that it would likely grade "A" even if full-sized.

SGC doesn't offer a grade of "0.5"
after "Authentic" it goes up to "1"

jcmtiger 01-30-2021 04:24 PM

Joe G’s son used to attend the Plymouth Michigan shows. Was collecting Press Pins at that time.

swarmee 01-30-2021 04:27 PM

So the discussion kind of went sideways. Was this a "known" Wagner that is one of the 60-ish currently tracked, or it is a "new to the hobby" find? I think that was the gist of the original post.

jcmtiger 01-30-2021 04:39 PM

Don’t think it is a new card. Joe G’s son has been collecting for at least 25 years.

Howe’s Hunter 01-30-2021 04:47 PM

Sports Collectors Digest article about Joe’s collection

Don’t remember the date, but there was an article in SCD with Joe, believe he had a “complete” T206 set. Mentioned he just liked taking them out and looking at them for hours on end.

Wagner up to $690k now, guesses on where it ends at?

Tao_Moko 02-06-2021 12:17 PM

I saw it at $575k, but will guess it hammers at $1.2m. No telling these days.

vansaad 02-06-2021 01:12 PM

Given the recent Jordan sales and other huge prices on iconic cards, I’m gonna go way out there and say hammer falls at $2.4mm.

Final bid with BP: $2.52M!

Yea - been watchin this one since auction started - Unbelievable!

Schlesinj 02-28-2021 05:39 AM

I think Goldin has a PSA 2 coming soon.

chriskim 02-28-2021 06:07 AM

Everytime I see Wagner sold for higher high, I am so happy for someone who bought one privately before the market gone crazy. His investment has double/triple/.... every 6 month!

Would be crazy if Goldin put both of them in the same auction! No AH has ever done that before!

rats60 02-28-2021 06:29 AM

Does Goldin's PSA 2 pass the 5.2 million dollar Mantle sale? What are the 3 PSA 1 cards that recently sold worth now, triple? What about the PSA 3 that sold for 3.25 million, is it a 10 million dollar card?

TobaccoKing4 02-28-2021 06:33 AM

Wow, $2.52 million....that's wild! I was a preteen in the early 2000s so maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but wouldn't this have been a $120k-$150k card back then? Beats investing in the stock market.

..."a" 2, not 2.

And yes, very robust sale last night. I am very happy for a particular friend of mine.

PSA A sales go from 540k to 2.52 million in a year and a half.

LOL.. I read too fast or I need another coffee. PSA2 would be a $4M+ card.
