February 2020 Pick ups

3 Attachment(s)
Technically I picked these items up at the end of last month but since they arrived today I'm posting them for February. The 1952 Leo Durocher Loraine Day easel backed counter top display is 36"X24" and included the original shipping envelope. I am a sucker for this type of 1950s advertising. I have a few others that are similiar in my collection. This is by far the largest. The Clemente family photo is from 1970 and the Duke Snider is a 1956 photo.

Burns of the Giants

1 Attachment(s)
Just arrived: pro model bat with what I'm pretty sure is the signature of the Giants' George J Burns (as opposed to the signature of the Tigers' George H. "Tioga" Burns). Always excited to get an old Giants model bat!

Chris,

Beautiful early Orioles cap. Could you also post it in the B.R. and Baltimore Orioles thread?

May have just stumbled upon a gem. A 1947-48 National League baseball signed by former commissioner John A. Heydler. The ball itself is almost perfect. Can’t find a single-signed ball of his anywhere, so yay for me!

5 homeruns in a doubleheader!

1 Attachment(s)
So on May 2nd, 1954 Stan Musial became the first player to hit 5 HRs in a doubleheader. Attending the game in St. Louis was an 8 year old named Nate Colbert. On August 1st, 1972 he became the second player to achieve the feat. The only two times it has happened. Was able to finally find the Colbert ticket and it's a full. Tough from Atlanta.

I'm glad that you were finally able to get the deal on the Nate Colbert ticket done. Congrats!

"Nice. Any player attribution?"

It was sold as a Lou Kretlow cap, but I'm not certain since there's another early Orioles cap that exists with Lou's signature on the underside of the bill. But it's definitely a 1954-56 cap with the rectangular McAuliffe tag.

Picked up a Jackie Robinson bat for my Spline collection. Now I am just missing the Mathews...

And, I got the companion jersey for my Japanese-American semi-pro Niseis jersey. These are AMAZING, and will go on the wall soon.
These just might be two of the coolest pieces I have ever had the good fortune of getting. I was able to do some research (with the help of some friends like Ben) and really pinpoint where they came from.

Boat Sign

https://i213.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9qnk2wfh.jpg

https://i213.photobucket.com/albums/...psdicgrfwy.jpg

This 1950’s sign is pretty late for my collection…and it’s sort of more pleasure craft than racing that I like…but so unique I just couldn’t pass on it… it’s 36” so should do well with my boating stuff….and it’s double sided!!!...so the wire attached to the eye hooks will be going away…and two brass sash chains will hang it from the ceiling…once it gets here…I’ve never seen a sign like it…From what I’ve read the Cornwallis company only lasted two or three years….they sure moved in on Chris-Craft…copy catting the “Craft” in their name…speaking of Chris-Craft…imagine if it said Chris-Craft what it would be worth…veering off a bit…I recently heard a Chris-Craft sign story that put me back in my seat…

https://i213.photobucket.com/albums/...psamungklu.jpg

So I’m on facebook and a guy posted a video of an off-the-chart car collection…car and motorcycle actually…it was kind of a limited quick view that panned the collection inside a decked out warehouse…right at the start I saw this incredible large Chris-Craft neon sign…I enquired of the guy that posted it if it was for sale or what…he goes…already sold…really I said…what’s the story….he says…sold for $45,000.00 to a customer of his..I said what’s the story where’d it come from…he said he got it at the 2019 Turlock Auto Swap meet…which is only an hour and a half from me…Said it was very poor condition when he got it…so poor he didn’t even make out the letters Chris-Craft it was so worn….until a friend pointed it out…

1970s Cleveland Indians Group Outings Counter Display

Picked up a neat counter display for group outings at Cleveland's old Municipal Stadium. The display measures approximately 13" x 21.5" and dates to approximately 1975-76. Next step: figure out how best to frame or store it!

Detriot New Tribune Oct 8`th 1905

Picked this piece up from a fellow board member couple months back. Nice newspaper from 1905 depicting an 18 year old Ty Cobb. Top photo, bottom row 2`nd from left shows Cobb fresh off the first 41 games of a 24 year career. Bonus shot, same photo top row left, rookie year Eddie Cicotte later of the infamous 1919 Black Sox. Keep the items coming guys always enjoy seeing them.

ebay Pick-Up

2 Attachment(s)
I was searching on eBay and found this ad piece. I purchased one of these 3 or 4 years ago in REA and at the time believed it to be a one of a kind piece (obviously not any longer). It also comes with the envelope from the
company that sent it as an added bonus. I will be shipping this off to auction soon I would imagine. A very beautiful and rare piece

Thanks Rob...It was an unheard of kind of piece...especially being die cut and all...so I felt I had to get it...But when you're dropping serious coin on something you've never seen an example of before...going just on the listing photo...you never really know how it will look in person till you get it...Had I seen it hanging in an antiques store or show it would have been an easy green light...I got it hung up tonight using old school brass sash chain...not cheap stuff...$2.99 a foot for the chain...And now that it's up I'm very glad I pulled the trigger...I'm always curious where stuff comes from and asked the seller...said it came out of Minnesota...his reply below:

Your sign is packed very well and will be in it’s way tomorrow. I purchased the sign from a small engine / boat dealer in west Central Minnesota - he closed his shop a few years ago but had been in business since the 1960’s - he started in boats / motors but converted to motorcycles, chainsaws, lawnmowers in the 1980’s - and small engine repair. Thanks again Carlton - hope you enjoy the sign as much as I did!

Love stuff like this. Both are super cool and I like that the tops are a tad different. Makes for a great display piece in my view.

The handles are different, too. The older one is noticeably heavier.

Even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut!

Both came off ebay. My buddy also has the 1958; his given to another local quasi-celebrity. I saw the 1954 with 7 hours to go. The seller had listed it under pennants and flags , where I was searching new york giants, minus NFL, football, etc.

new Senators bat

1 Attachment(s)
Joe Judge pro-model from the mid-20's. I don't suppose it's highly sought after by collectors, but this contributes to my TINY 1924-25 Senators collection. I always wonder how many bats of a minor star like Joe Judge are in collectors' hands. Anybody out there have one or more of these?

MGHPro 02-13-2020 08:05 PM

There aren’t many judge bars around - I’ve had 2 . That may be one of them . Nice bat

During the 2016 season the Pirates hired sports artist Ronnie Joyner to create art celebrating members of the 1971 Championship team. The art was featured as full pages in the Pirates programs that year. These two are pen and ink original production art pieces I purchased from the artist. The adjacent image is how they appeared in the programs.

Mike, your 1971 Bucs collection is f’ing outstanding!

71buc 02-14-2020 10:11 PM

Thanks Rob, those are kind words considering the depth and quality of your Giants collection. I think the 71 Bucs have been the one unfailing constant in my life for the past 49 years. I fell in love with baseball because of that team. I remain grateful to them for that.

Del, nice pickup. Any name on the cover or inside? Sometimes there are notations or ownership notes that can be historical. Hope so. The reason they are slightly shorter is the binder trimmed them as part of the binding process.
