December 2009 Net54baseball.com contest- true contest

OK guys and girls.....This contest for December is a true contest, not just guessing a price. First one to answer this question correctly, in full, will get this nice E97 of Birmingham.....It's not too tough of a question but will require (hopefully) a bit of searching....

The answer has to be posted in this thread. IF it is a tie the first one to be posted in the thread wins....

Question- What team, the years, player and # of home runs in each series, that won at least 2 MLB baseball championships, had 1 player hit all of their home runs in 2 of their championships?

I don't think there is more than one answer but if there is, the first one to answer with a correct answer still wins. So, if 2 teams did it, the first one to answer with a confirmed correct answer wins.....thanks for playing. I hope this takes longer than 5 minutes to answer...but if not, it pays to watch the board :)

Since this is a bit off the beaten track I will make the final decision, fairly, on any issues that might come up....And that decision is binding

Shortest contest ever.

Edited to add: 13 minutes.

drdduet 12-03-2009 09:25 AM

Or Babe Ruth in 1926 (4) and 1927 (2) for the New York Yankees....

drdduet 12-03-2009 09:33 AM

but of course the Yankees didn't win in 1926.

Leon 12-03-2009 09:33 AM

don't think so

I don't think this was the shortest contest yet but maybe it was. Since it was so short we will have another contest this month. That will make up for not having one last month too (I don't think we did).

The Ruth answer above is the one I was thinking but the other answer might be correct too. Regardless, Dr.D wins....

Darren- please shoot me your shipping addy to leonl@flash.net and I will try to get your card out today....thanks much!!

and correct, it was my mistake in that they didn't win both years....and that was also why I put a caveat in the rules about decisions.....I figured I could have made a mistake and would take care of it in a fair manner....

What about Athletics 1911 and 1913. Homerun Baker, 3 homeruns and I think he had 1 in 1913 but maybe someone else did to or maybe he didn't have any ? Congrats to quickdraw Dr. D !

May want to check me on this but Hank Greenburg for Detroit in 1935 (1) and 1945 (2)...

drdduet 12-03-2009 09:47 AM

Hey Johnny,

My source shows that in 1911 Oldring for Philly had one, and in 1913 Schang hit one as well.

I was thinking someone else had one but couldn't remember, I think one of those was an inside the park dinger.

Here's a contest question for Matt, or anybody else: What is Comic Book Guy's real name? (it was revealed in one episode).

bigtrain 12-03-2009 11:44 AM

It stuck with me because I have a client with the same name "Jeff Albertson".

barrysloate 12-03-2009 11:48 AM

Tom got it.:)

Trivia

This was on my baseball calendar today:

" Who is the only Hall of Famer to hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat ?

I think it's been done at least twice by a HOFer. Earl Averill and Hoyt Wilhelm both did it.

barrysloate 12-03-2009 02:31 PM

Hoyt Wilhelm did it and never hit another in his career.

What player had exactly one career home run, and hit it in the 22nd inning of a game?

Abravefan11 12-03-2009 02:49 PM

Jack Reed

barrysloate 12-03-2009 03:34 PM

Correcto!

Jim VB 12-03-2009 03:50 PM

Other interesting facts about the guys who have homered in their first MLB at bat:

It has actually happened 102 times.

19 of those players (Wilhelm and 18 others) never homered again in the majors.

The Arizona Diamondbacks had 3 different guys do it... in 2009!

Now the follow up question:

Which one of these 102 guys hit the MOST career home runs?

Rich Klein 12-03-2009 04:06 PM

According to Wiki

Gary Gaetti with 360.

Carlos Lee and Jermaine Dye both have a reasonable chance of passing Gaetti.

Jim VB 12-03-2009 04:13 PM

Yup. Top 3 are:
Gaetti - 360
Dye - 325
Lee - 307

Rich Klein 12-03-2009 05:15 PM

OK Jim

One of those players on the list of 102 not only hit a homer in his first major league at bat; but also in his final major league at-bat

Since we know the pool; I suspect you can give me the answer to that q

Rich

Jim VB 12-03-2009 05:47 PM

I think 2 guys did it, Paul Gillespie and John Miller. Those were the only 2 Miller ever hit.

Rich Klein 12-03-2009 05:49 PM

Miller was the one I was looking for

And the interesting ending to Miller's career was that after the homer; he "played' in another game. He was announced as a pinch-hitter and then was pinch-hit for before he came to the plate.
