Scout who helped discover Nolan Ryan dies

"Red" Gaskill, a bird-dog scout who helped the Mets sign future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, has died.

Scouts are the lifeblood of baseball. Sad news indeed.

Here's a link to Gaskill's obituary. A true baseball man.

Thanks Rob. Sounds like this man had the game in his veins, the kind of guy with whom you'd love to share a beverage and talk ball.

RIP, Mr. Gaskill. Pretty cool story. I agree, would have been a fun guy to have a beer with. Baseball's lost a lot of giants this past week.

As for the man he scouted, I was pretty young near the end of Ryan's career, but as a young White Sox fan, I'll never forget when Nolan Ryan (then 46), did this to Robin Ventura (then 26).

I'm not surprised the man who scouted Ryan lived to a ripe old age; tough guys can always spot a tough guy.

RIP
