Autographed Pre-War Card Show & Tell

It's been awhile since we've had one of these threads. Anybody got anything new to share?

I'll share one that I rarely display, since I'm not particularly fond of the T205 set. But this is easily my best autographed T205 card. I really like how Davy Jones broke up his name to beautifully fit it within the context of the T205 layout. Only a little back damage keeps this one from grading a bit higher:

Sorry, I don't have any autographed cards to share but I used to collect autographs of players from the T206 set. I still have them if you'd like to see any of those?

You got anybody that died before 1960?

Orioles1954 08-04-2010 08:41 AM

Paul,

I would have had some new ones if PSA/DNA would not have ruined my fun!

No sure about that. I think most of them are players you more commonly see autographs from, so they are probably from later.

Bridwell
Wheat
Carrigan
Leifeld
Parent
Fiene
Marquard
maybe a couple others I can't recall off-hand.

The reason I chose the 1960 cutoff is that the guys you listed are "typically" found on T206 cards, especially Marquard. But even the post-1960 guys are still a nice collection!

Autographs

I've been collecting autographs of the T206 players, also. I currently have 85 different players. 35 are players who died prior to 1960. I've enjoyed collecting them and learning about the players. Had a couple of autographed T206's in the past, but sold or traded them. Two of the best resources I've found are Deadball Stars of the American League and Deadball Stars of the National League. They include examples of the autograph of almost all the players listed.

The National turned up approximately 5-6 pre-war signed cards, all from 1930s gum issues.

Saw a Ty Cobb auto'd exhibit card today - not sure of the year but it was slabbed and pretty sweet.

I also saw it and agree.

Ty Cobb Exhibit

Can someone take a pic and post it? Or at least identify the issue? And asking price?

Danny Smith 08-06-2010 07:52 AM

It was 2750. I bought a cobb check from him and he was pretty good to deal with. Won't be back till Saturday but Ill take a pic if it's still there.

That is it.

T206Collector 08-06-2010 03:12 PM

Do you know whether it was still with FRP Sports? Or does it have a new owner?

Danny Smith 08-06-2010 03:17 PM

It is still with frp.

That's not the one I saw. A dealer, I think in Aisle 700 (maybe 800?) had an autographed 1921 Exhibit of Cobb. He was showing it to another dealer, and I heard him say he bought it from a walk-in within an hour after the show opened Wednesday. Really nice, bold signature in what looked like black fountain pen. I didn't look at it closely because it seemed a deal was in the works and I didn't want to intrude.
