1933-34 Adam Hats premiums

I just searched and in almost 10 yrs we have never had a dedicated thread on these little jewels. I had been looking for a baseball player one since beginning my type collecting. Even though they are large they fit in nicely with a type collection. I think I can use the term "scarce" on these since I have never seen another baseball one for sale. (I am sure there have been some for sale since I have been collecting but I haven't seen them.) This thread might go absolutely no where but at least now we can say we have an Adams Hats thread. Neat pieces imho.....This is still on the way into me from the Legendary auction. Anyone else have any baseball players?

Exhibitman 03-12-2011 08:19 AM

Some or all of the issue was used in a contest in Adam Hats matchbooks. Here is your Hubbell used as a contest piece:

A later series of Adam Hats cards, ca. 1938, is cataloged as H815 and contains boxers, in two formats. There are also an unknown number of Adam Hats celebrities and other athletes, including golfers and hockey players.

There were also postcards made from some them

Beautiful cards, very neat.

Well those are new to me...

I'm quite impressed. Nice! Thanks for posting.

fkw 03-12-2011 11:52 AM

Very cool :) I didnt know they were colorized. only ones Ive seen are the B&W pics in catalogs.

Only minor thing I can add to the thread is the name is really "ADAM HATS" not "ADAMS HATS"

The SCD Big Book should change its listing title too :)

Hats!

Hi Leon,
I think I saw a group of these (mostly non-BB) in Legendary's Auction catalog. They are fascinating! Doug at Legendary sends me the actual catalog to use as it's easier for me to read and study for medical issues.
I'm hoping that more members will post others, sports of all types, and other celebrities! The hats are stunning as well!
thanks to all for sharing these fine items. Once again, I must say that the finest collectors anywhere are among the great members here on net54!
Regards,
Bill Hedin

Thanks for the kind words guys. Yes, Adam and I collect some off the beaten path stuff. Understanding the hobby was pretty much founded on collecting sets, type card collecting is a lot of fun too!! I was never one into having the same types of things.....As I have said 1001 times, all collecting is good collecting. BTW, FKW, I never realized they were colorized either. Love the green tie on this one. :) (Yes, it's "Adam" Hats) best regards

I love the first hat on Gomez. The second, eh....

Here is the last (chronologically)of the Adam Hats ad pieces I've run across. The film listed was a 1946 release.

Here is hockey HOFer Red Dutton from the same colorized set as the two Leon has posted:

Great stuff, everyone. Here's a 1943 store poster advertising a radio program sponsored by Adam Hats. Ed Herlihy narrated thousands of newsreels (including coverage of sports events) but is mostly remembered as being "the voice of cheese" for his announcing work on the Kraft Music Hall and the Kraft Television Theater. (NBC's Blue Network would later be sold and renamed ABC)

I just got the group put on my website. A few points not previously brought up.

1. They are very heavy card type stock. Not photo thickness but much thicker.
2. They have amazing clarity in person.
3. Since the backs say they were "Property of Adam Hats, Inc." that might be the reason for their scarcity. Very happy I picked them up, and like I said, I don't think I have ever seen a baseball player Adam Hats photo for sale before.

Great pickups, Leon. The Maxie Rosenbloom is a dandy!

kcohen 03-23-2011 01:50 PM

Terrific find Leon. Hubbell looks like he should be carrying a tommy gun.

Catalog expansion here.

As far as I can tell, there are four distinct formats of Adam Hats cards:

--Colorized version
--B & W Portraits
--Dual image [like the Pastor shown above] in two formats
--Movie promo [only the Randolph Scott known to date]

Here is a type 2 Lefty Gomez, new pose and previously unknown card:

Here is the Adam Hats Lefty Gomez matchbook. Note the reversed image. Excuse the blur; my scanner doesn't do depth:

They made a generic ad display of a ballplayer catching a fly ball. Only seen one that I think sold sometime ago 2005 or so. I would love to get that item it's just a great period colorful ad.

Tao_Moko 07-18-2013 03:36 AM

Thanks for sharing the info in this thread.

The color types are spectacular. I have a hat, but no card. Mine looks more like the one on Lefty's grape.

Resurrecting an old thread for a new (matchbook) pick up. Love the things that go with other things. :)

hoot-owl 01-05-2015 12:02 PM

Hubbell

Not certain if I would take the type card over the actual hat. If I had to choose just one pose--it would be the Hubbell.

Exhibitman 01-05-2015 12:11 PM

I'm one off the complete matchbook run. Some other big names besides Gomez and Hubbell were Jack Dempsey, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and George Raft.

Exhibitman 06-16-2015 05:47 PM

Finished the matchcover run.

Speaking of things that go with other things, I found this recently:

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...20schedule.JPG

The 93-year-old Jake La Motta is set to be at the National. Do I have him sign this Adam Hats premium? As far as I can tell he is the last living subject of the set:

Leon 06-16-2015 05:55 PM

Congrats Adam....I know you spent some time searching for the last matchbook. And I love the hand stamp on that new Adam Hat ad item.

And since it is him and in person, I would say do on getting La Motta's auto. It's not a greatly valuable item without the autograph (few hundred or less?). Getting it in person would be cool...
