 3 Wagners & 3 Planks - cash offers? |
|
Some of you will remember Wirt's Words ... "perhaps a reader can help". |
|
Cards wanted... Very interesting Leon... He wants G300 Extra Large Old Mills and will pay $2 for them ! (I assume he is referring to the rare Old Mill Cabinets ??) Also had good taste... He is a big collector of T210's and T211's ! |

Pretty neat article Leon. I remember when Wirt wrote articles for SCD back in the 1970's and 1980's I think that was "Wirt's Words" Rob. Joe |

Wonder if he ever received the three Wagners and Planks; and if he did were they T206s? |
|
of special note I thought it kind of funny there was a bit of a complaint about everyone being a dealer and then one of the ads noted- (Not a Dealer) :) ...... |
|
 Great read Leon...keep posting 'em! :) |
|
Damn and I so have a shaving mug to trade too! Ugh! |

very cool and interesting, love reading these older hobby newsletters and want/sell/trade lists. |

Thanks for posting this Leon. It's great to read these things from the early days of collecting. I hope and wish today's collectors could be aware of the beginnings of this great hobby. |

Utilizing one of the "inflation calculators" available on the internet, it appears that a dollar in 1946 would be worth approximately eleven dollars today. By the looks of it vintage cards have outpaced inflation in a huge way. |

Note on Bob Wilson's want list he is looking for a 1933 Goudey Lajoie. I wonder if he got one? |

Where oh where is H.G. Wells when you need him? Now where did I put my time machine, dammit! Great post, Leon! Larry |

Interesting to note how all deals were done through the mail and presumably with a great deal of trust even with unknown parties. Reminds me of how my grandfather used to collect stamps throughout the world many, many years ago. He established a network of friends in many different countries with a standing agreement that he would soak off US postal stamps and send them abroad if they would do the same from their countries. As a result I now have a large (probably monetarily worthless, but sentimentally very valuable) collection of foreign stamps. A great read Leon -- thanks for sharing. -Scott |

The gent decided simply to put it in the mail - uninsured no less - for us to look at. Turned out that the card was more like Ex than NM -- but it was so cool to open up a package and see that card staring at ya. Esp. since I was in grade school at time :) S |

I bought my first T205s from Wirt in 1976 after seeing a complete set at my first card show. I remember thinking on the drive home from the show that the dealer that had the set for $200.00 was "nuts." Wirt not only wrote for the SCD but ran ads offering T205s & T206s at nice prices but his choice of cards, not yours. He also wrote a nice history of the Chattanooga Lookouts. |

Wirt - Perhaps a reader can help..... 2 Attachment(s) Anybody ever receive one of these from Wirt and what year do you suppose they were made - Late 50's, early 60's? |
|
I was going to say a touch earlier. Mid-40s? |

Jason, Sports Illustrated is in the text on back so it has to be at least 1954 |
