Slabbed Photos - Market Research

When it comes to PSA/DNA, does it matter to you if a signed photograph is slabbed, or are you comfortable with just a full cert that pictures the piece?

Are you more comfortable buying a high end photo if it is slabbed (Ruth, Clemente, Ronald Reagan, etc) or does it not matter?

Thanks for your input.

If you're talking 8x10, as opposed to card size, I'd prefer it unslabbed with LOA. I don't like PSA/DNA's slabs for photos.

Comfort-wise it makes no difference, even if I like the slab better.

Just my opinion.

Scott, I am much more comfortable buying a high-end photo that is NOT slabbed. The more non-slabbed photos, the better. I only have one and I'm irritated every time I see the ugly label - it's also obvious that someone trimmed it unnecessarily, which is one of the many downsides to the slabbed photo hogwash.

I am thinking 5 x 7 to 8 x 10.

I have always thought that cuts look better slabbed, simply because it is harder to loose them. I have had cut signatures so small that I dropped them on the ground and never found them again. A slabbed cut at least makes a thud when it hits the ground :)

The PSA baseball card slabs are nice for signed cuts, cards and index cards. I like those. I was talking about the big slabs designed for news photos.

But beyond my taste, I don't know how a slab versus a photo LOA for an 8x10 would me make more or less comfortable at purchase time.

Personally, the slabbing or not slabbing of a photo makes no difference in whether or how much I would bid on an item. I wouldn't pay more because of the cert or the slab, but I wouldn't pay less either. I don't care for the photo slabs of either company. If I had to choose, I think the PSA version is nicer.

I can certainly appreciate someone's desire to protect a high value photo. I guess for me a pic in a sleeve in a binder, a rigid top loader, or frame is enough. I like having the option of actually handling the stuff I own.

Actually, it was probably trimmed necessarily for publication. This is why psa doesn't grade them..they just authenticate them. If you didn't want a trimmed photo, why did you buy it?

Ben, you read a lot into my post that wasn't there.

edited to remove my detailed response - just not up for it today.

I did? I don't think I did at all.. seemed pretty simple/cut and dry to me. Which is probably why you deleted your post. You have mentioned trimmed photos over and over again.. and I wonder why. That is all. A photo being trimmed has nothing to do with it being in a PSA slab.. nothing... ZERO. Why would you buy teh trimmed photo and why do you think trimming is a downside to slabs?? It makes absolutely NO SENSE.

Duly note that I was commenting only on autographed photos.

And I'm not fond of the Beckett photo holder either.

I hear you.. I would rather have an loa. If we are talking only signed photos here, I guess I would still rather have the loa rather slabbed if keeping for myself. I would rather have it slabbed if I were to sell it though which I guess is kind of weird.. Sorry Scott g... Looks like I am a wash:)

Thanks for the feedback guys

No, I deleted it because I realized it would just encourage another attack by you. If I had realized that an attack was imminent regardless, I would have gone ahead and gotten it out of the way. I mentioned trimmed photos because Scott Gaynor asked a question and I responded honestly to it.

Yes, IN MY OPINION, a photo MAY have something to do with being in a slab. Some photos look better trimmed AND in a slab (to some people), thus SOMETIMES encouraging people to trim the photo prior to submitting. Why would I buy a trimmed photo? Because the image is good and it's a tough photo, and it still looks good. It doesn't mean I have to like the fact that someone else trimmed it first.

In this case, the photo still has the white borders - they were simply trimmed, probably to remove a few small border tears, possibly writing, etc. I have no idea, as the photo has been TRIMMED of all evidence. No, there is no evidence or reason to believe that the photo was ever published. Trimming is not always done to prepare a photo for publication. Now it's nicely trimmed and placed in a PSA slab with a flip, so it looks good to people who like such things.

As mentioned previously, it's a very nice image. I don't buy photos for their 'Type' designation on a PSA flip, or for whether or not they are trimmed. I buy them for the image and how well it presents, regardless of trimming or slabs.

We don't agree. It's really no big deal.

Not taking my toys and running, but I'm done with this thread - the continual photo slab angst with you just isn't worth it. See you in another thread :)

Soooo... You bought it because it looked good to you trimmed in a slab.. Gotcha.. Insane. Why haven't you taken it out of the slab if it is such an eye sore? Can you post a picture?

Depends on the item. Protection-wise I certainly can appreciate slabbing some older photos. Heck, I have an 11 x 14 Dana original of Jim Jeffries that I'd love to have slabbed for protection. From an authentication perspective, I find having the cert as the capsule around the item more convenient than having a separate paper cert--can't tell you the number of times I've fumbled around my storage area looking for that damned slip of paper to go with the item. That said, the slabs can be bulky and inconvenient. I guess what I'm saying is that I would not buy or refuse to buy an item just because of a slab.

On a total tangent, I liked the capsules that CGC was experimenting with for a while with photos--they were about as thick as a semi-rigid but fully sealed and held the photos safer than an album page. They had been doing it with lobby cards in 2011 as well but they might have dropped that. Too bad, seemed like a decent lightweight alternative.

You know what might be great too is a large format semi-rigid, sort of a card saver for larger format items. I don't like the top loaders because items slide around but I use them as a default.
