Pronunciation of Sweet Caporal

Is it pronounced Sweet "Cuh-POOR-al" or Sweet "CAP-ur-al"? Just curious.

t206blogcom 05-16-2013 08:31 PM

I used to say Cuh-POOR-al until I heard CAP-ur-al. When I heard CAP-ur-al, I felt like an idiot, thinking I had it wrong for years. :o

I tend to hear CAP-ur-al more often.

jimivintage 05-16-2013 08:40 PM

I had only ever heard it as CAP-ur-al until last week. I'm assuming I'm right. :)

I feel like an idiot too... Been saying Sweet Cap-pore-al for the 20 years since I got my first one.

I also said "goo-dee" for years before hearing another person say it and pronounce it as "gow-dee"... I've only ever heard it pronounced that way since.

Tobacco&Gum 05-16-2013 09:20 PM

Funny thread. Actually I had it wrong twice! :o

About two weeks after I began collecting T206's I was online showing my wife some cards that were for sale on Ebay. When I showed her a SC I said to her, "These are Sweet CORPORAL'S, they're one of the more common back ad's". She replied, "That doesn't say Corporal you idiot".

Also, I thought it was Cuh-POOR-al until I read this thread. :D

While we're at it, is it "You-Zit", or Ooze-Zit?:)

Classic! I thought EPDG were El "Principal" De Gales for a long time.

I'm on the "You-Zit" bandwagon

Sweet Caps

I say Sweet cah- por- 'OWL.

Reminds me of Mel Brooks calling Count de Monet, "Count the Money" in History of the World Part I. When will the sequel be released?

itjclarke 05-16-2013 09:32 PM

I don't think anyone can be completely wrong in this thread. I mean, we live in a country where Nomar Garciaparra was "No-mahhh Gah-see-up-pahahhhh" to his hometown fans.. and I'm not about to challenge any of the Fenway faithful on that one.;)

"I don't like your cuffs, I don't like your cuffs, I don't like you cuffs"

I too wanted that sequel, but aside from "Jews in Space", don't think any of those others could carry a movie.. "Hitler on Ice" would've gotten pretty old after 2 minutes.

Ahhh... Good to know. I thought it was goo-dee too. Dang.

"Gooooo-dee..... gooo-dee... goo-dee.. goo-dee!!" (said in same cadence as Animal House toga chant). I guess us San Franciscans think alike. I now feel empowered to bring goo-dee back into my life.

BTW- how about another offense fueled come back tonight! These are not your 2010-2012 Giants.

RCMcKenzie 05-16-2013 10:09 PM

Goudey

I have French Louisiana relatives who would say that it is pronounced goo-'DAY, but I'm not about to walk up to a dealer table in TX and pronounce it like that. The price would go up 4 fold. In TX they call them Gowdys like Howdy.

Bocabirdman 05-17-2013 05:51 AM

I solved the problem a long time ago by simply saying "Sweet CAP":D

frankbmd 05-17-2013 05:57 AM

All my friends who smoke Sweet Caps seem to say,

"Got-ta-lite" ?

EvilKing00 05-17-2013 06:18 AM

I always said, Cap - Ral

Orioles1954 05-17-2013 06:24 AM

I was yelled at by this 900 year-old guy at the National three years ago in Baltimore for saying Christy MATTHEW-son. "Everyone knows it's Christy MATH-E-SON young man".

Lol, he was probably good friends with Christy and took offense to it :p

old-baseball 05-17-2013 02:32 PM

Had an old-timer tell me one time that it was chap-o-ral.

Eric72 05-17-2013 02:43 PM

It sounded like CAP-uh-ral to me when I clicked the speaker icon next to the word caporal.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/caporal

Interestingly enough, caporal is a variety of tobacco. Am I the only one who didn't know that before?

Best Regards,

Eric

Cardboard Junkie 05-17-2013 02:48 PM

I didn't know that.

It'a a Miracle

Being born and raised Catholic I was taught in school the miracle of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. A rather significant miracle and rock solid in the Top Ten of Catholic miracles. Shift forward twenty years and I have become card collector, pre-ebay, pre Net54, pre just about everything except Lipsets Vols 1-3, Larry Fritch, and card shows. So while at my first card show I approach a dealer table and ask if he has any Fatima's. I pronounce it the way I was taught in Catholic School...FAT-eh-ma. He quickly corrected me that it was pronounced Fa-TEEM-ah. Being a card show newbie I was a bit embarrassed.

I pronounced Contentnea wrong for many years as well.

I am not really sure how to correctly pronounce Breisch (Williams), or Yuenglings.

auggiedoggy 05-18-2013 11:15 AM

Sweet Caps!

I simply call them "sweet caps". No worries about placing emPHAsis on the wrong syLLAble. ;)

Texxxx 05-18-2013 11:27 AM

I have all ways pronounced it Kap-eh-ral.

Steve D 05-18-2013 06:10 PM

I've always pronounced it CAP-or-al.

As justification, I go back to the opening scene of Pride of the Yankees, where the young Lou Gehrig tries to get into the baseball game by trading a bunch of "Sweet CAP-or-al" cards to the other kids.

Steve

glynparson 05-18-2013 11:55 PM

being a Pa native from close to Pottsville

Yuengling is pronounced Ying-Ling.

GoldenAge50s 05-19-2013 12:08 AM

In WNY State we pronounced it Yeng-Ling, which is practically the same.

glynparson 05-19-2013 12:15 AM

Dick Yuengling does commercials

around here a lot and he says Ying Ling but like you said essentially the same thing.

buymycards 05-19-2013 06:38 AM

Topps

Tahps - in case anyone is having trouble pronouncing it.

cyseymour 05-19-2013 04:03 PM

caporal [ˌkępəˈrɑːl]
n
a strong coarse dark tobacco
[from French tabac du caporal corporal's tobacco, denoting its superiority to tabac du soldat soldier's tobacco]

It's possible that the French term "caporal" originally derived from "corporeal" which means "bodily" as in, the French generals smoked full-bodied tobacco.

----

As for Nap Lajoie, his surname is derived of two words, "La" and "Joie" - in English, "The Joy". Joie in french is pronounced "shwah" (it is had to write since we don't use that sound in English, but you could listen to it off of GoogleTranslate on your Android.

frankbmd 05-19-2013 04:13 PM

You are all at least 50% wrong

Go back to Post #1 and read carefully. No one has addressed the pronunciation of Sweet.

The first "e" is long and the second "e" is long. For emphasis additional long "e"s may be added.

It should not be confused with sweat, which is salty.

All together now

"Sweeeeeeeeeeeet"

I'll never forget going to this old guys table as a beginning collector. I asked to see the Nap La-JOY. He looked at me like I had two heads. Rubbed his chin and thought very deeply. Finally with utmost disdain he said "Do you perhaps mean Nop-oh-le-ahhhhh Lah-zho-way?" I was mortified.

MVSNYC 05-19-2013 10:38 PM

I actually know it's proper to say Lah-zho-way...but La-JOY is so much easier. :)
