Walter Johnson - Not sure if it is real.
5 Attachment(s)
About 10 years ago I bought a lot of autographs in a album that were collected by Jerry Jackson. I sold some off and kept a few including Jerry Coleman, Harry Walker and Frank Crosetti. On the back of the Coleman sheet is a story of Walter Johnson and what appears to be an autograph. I have looked at it through a loop but not being an expert I have no idea what to look for.
I am hoping someone here can tell if it is real or fake. thanks, Shale |
This looks like an obituary page for Johnson? So my guess would be that it's a printed autograph at the top...and I can't see any ink overlap so even if that is not his obituary (which I think it is), I am fairly certain it's printed and not actually signed.

I concur that it looks printed. It also looks labored rather than smooth, so if it were in fact original ink, i would lean towards fake...just my 2 cents...
yeah the part where it says "died" about 1/4 inch below his signature in his bio may hold a clue here , just a hunch
It looks labored and slowly written which would most likely negate it being a facsimile. If I had it in hand I could say for certain what it is.
The probable forger might not have been smart enough to realize what the obituary part of the story meant :D:D |

Maybe ..just maybe and this is only a hunch that when Walter Johnson was signing he read the obituary foresaw EXACTLY when and where he was going to die ..and it created a lot of anxiety on his part which would make his signature appear "different" , then again another theory is that its a pre-print that was part of his obit......just guessing :)

totally a facsimile most likely from a whos who , nothing deceptive there
Hey, if Ruth and Mantle can still sign why not Walter?
Lol I got a chuckle out of this one :)
Walter's picked up three more victories since he died.
I have had my problem with Johnson. This one looks like a loser.
To me it looks like the newspaper copied an original Johnson signature, as in traced over one - they enhance photos, why not signatures? They even appear to have completed the bottom of the 'J' where it is often empty, with a small loop.
