1948 leaf Paige....
 

I have not seen any recent sales, what are the average price for graded examples, preferably PSA/SGC 1-3 range.

I been browsing and looking for a affordable one for myself over the past few months. I found one, but was told to wait for a better one, and i agreed that it was not focused to well and o/c a bit. I hope the following info helps ya out

It does list a few:

Sept 3,2014 Legendary sold a PSA 3 for 4,780
May 17,2014 Heritage sold SGC40/3 for 5,078.75
Nov 27,2013 MileHIgh sold PSA 1 for 1,407.77
Back in 2012 a few 5's sold in the 6-7k ranges

It's a very hard card to price since it's pretty rare, with few recorded sales, and further complicating matters is how the eye appeal varies wildly. Probably the toughest PostWar major card to come by and then price. I've seen 3s that destroy 5s in the eye appeal department. I've seen high grades of this card look just awful due to poor focus and centering, yet the corners get the card a technically high grade. I paid $4250 for a centered and focused 1.5, which subsequently bumped to 2. When it comes to this card, you can see a 5 sell for X and then another 5 if centered and/or focused can sell for almost 2X. The Paige SP is a unique beast.

The Satchel Paige card is not only a tough 2nd series card....it has been proven that this card was Short-Printed within this series.

I acquired my Paige card in 1982 when it was very affordable. If I was to tell you what I paid for it, it would blow your mind.

Another tough 2nd series card is Larry Doby's rookie card. This card was the last one I needed to complete my
98-card (+ the 3 variations) 1949 LEAF set.

Please don't call these cards "1948". They are strictly a 1949 issue. The TPG's have incorrectly dated these cards.

Just looking at old hobby periodicals, it is apparent that those buying in the 70s and early 80s got in on a lot of stuff before the prices took off. I remember buying a somewhat rough 33 Goudey Rogers Hornsby for somewhere around $16 (from Michael Cramer). It had a light crease, rounded corners and was "dirty" looking, but for a kid, it was still a really cool card and one that was affordable at the time. I'd guess the year was probably 82-84.

I always wanted a Paige, but missed the boat. Settled for the 53 Topps instead. I got the Jackie though.

Ah, price inflation. Picked up this Mantle at a card show in 1982. The dealer kind of scratched his head when I asked what he wanted for it, he turned it over, looked at the back and said 59 bucks. Wonder how he came up with that figure.:eek:

A few times since, have puzzled over whether, if that dealer also had a 52 Mick in similar condition, if I would have jumped on it had he used the same pricing method. I'd like to hope so, but those were different times.

I recall buying 1955 Bowman Aaron, Banks and Mays in VGEX condition for $2.50 each at a card show in 1975 or so. I had a chance to get a 1952 Topps Mantle in about the same condition for $600 but at that time that was so much money it could have just as well been $600k.

If it was like some of the cards I bought back then, the price was written on the back!!

Neat story....things were very interesting in this hobby in the early 1980's. Also in 1982, I was at a monthly auction run by Alan "Mr Mint" Rosen.
An ExMt 1953 Bowman Mantle card was up for bidding. Rosen started it at $45. Someone raised their hand. Then Rosen said "$46". I raised my
hand....followed by total silence. I looked around the hall and no one else was bidding on this Mantle. I was surprised, and won it for only $46.

So, that event got me started on completing this beautiful 160-card set.


Incidently, a 1952 Topps Mantle (Ex) at that auction went for $500.

Ted - I think your story of the halcyon days of bargain-bin collecting really tops mine. If only that dealer had not forgotten to bring his '52 Topps Mantle to the show, I might have bagged it for a whopping $311...rats!:rolleyes:

$59 or $46.....not too much difference for our beautiful Mantle cards. We were fortunate to be collecting cards back in those good ole days.

My 2 teenage daughters got me back into collecting BB cards in 1977 when they were collecting 1977 Topps cards. I am certainly glad that I
got them interested in BB when they were very young.

The Paige is also one of the most faked cards out there. I have seen some fakes that look damn near perfect. If I had a raw one, I would send it in ASAP under the fastest turnaround time.

The only reason I ask, is because I am thinking of trading my complete 1952 topps set for one...
