Pennant P/U...Are there 40" pennant holders?

I picked up this pennant recently...Being tennis and for a high school I can't recall anything like it...Has anyone had experience getting rid of the creases? I'm thinking of trying a steamer from the back...as opposed to ironing it... I've been trying to find a 40" wide plastic sleeve holder to no avail...anyone know where I could get a holder that big?...biggest I've seen are 30" |
Great looking pennant Carlton! Love the tennis graphic. I have never seen an oversized pennant holder unfortunately. I have had some oversized pennants that didn't warrant framing, shrink wrapped to protect them and be able to display them. It is pretty inexpensive.

Agree with Keith...
Nothing exists in that size. Pretty safe to say there's just not enough demand to warrant manufacture. When it comes to oversized pennants, you either frame it or leave it raw and un-slabbed  Oops... forgot shrinkwrap. Great option, as Keith points out, and if you know how to do it (which I do not). But great idea to fend off the moths and dust! |

I have a small handful of oversized pennants. Since my primary objective is to display as many as possible, I make my holder to custom fit the size and dimensions of each one. A $15 plastic (and corrugated) board at Home Depot can be used to make the back of 4 or 5 such pennants, you will need a utility knife. Then I slide the pennant and its back as far as it will go into a standard soft pennant sleeve. This still exposes the wide end, because of its size, so I cut up two more soft sleeves to cover the top and bottom of the wide end, using clear tape to join them. The result is admittedly patchwork and not terribly pretty, and it may not ideal for preservation, but in a clean room there shouldn't be any problems and I think they still look okay.

Love the tennis graphic too, Carlton. My knowledge of tennis memorabilia is in its infancy, but the look of the flat top racket indicates possibly earlier than 1910.
My interest in tennis items grew recently after finding a similar flat top racket at an estate sale. Knew little of the large amount of early racket styles and variations, and still do, but came across this JTH site which was interesting and has great info and images. You are probably aware of them. Large PDF full of rackets and memorabilia- scroll to page 58 to get to the non-racket memorabilia. http://tennisboutique.com/files/pdf/...%202013.v2.pdf http://tennisboutique.com/tennis-museum-collection |
Thanks all
Thank you to everyone for your appreciation and tips...
Greg thetahat, Yeah I was hoping it wouldn't come down to fabricating something like what you describe, as it would be nice to just slide it in and be done with it...I think I'll look into getting it shrink wrapped... Joe vintagesportscollector, Thanks for the link to the tennis museum...I know Rolph a little...he's got some collection...I like that tennis clock with the flanking man and woman players....Yeah I've been kind of on a tennis streak the last 6 months...not out of any plan I just happen to bump into the stuff and can't resist it...Like this pennant...I spotted it on my buddy Keith Schneider's site gasolinealleyantiques.com...it was priced $139.00...and he said it had been on there forever....how could I pass it up at that price...Also picked up this porcelain sign below recently...Stumbled onto it while researching that Krammer Riggs poster...on an Australian website that sells nothing but antique advertising...OldSydneySigns.com.au...wasn't cheap but I wasn't leaving it in Australia! |
Killer sign Carlton, and nice job saving it from the Aussies.

Pennant
Carlton, Here is an example of what one of my shrink wrapped pennants looks like. A framer I use in Adamstown does it, and it is pretty cheap - maybe $15 to $20 for a pennant if I recall correctly.

Thanks
Thanks Joe...glad you appreciate it...
Keith, thanks for the visual...yeah turning the tassels in is a good idea...I just phoned a framer and they said about $15.00...Now I just need to work on those creases before I shrink wrap it... |
