Single Owner Collection Signed M101-2's & M114's Up For Auction

18 Attachment(s)
Single owner collection of signed 1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements, M113 & M114 Baseball Magazine Premiums and George Burke photographs up for auction. Highlights of this collection include signed photos by Babe Ruth, Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Mordecai Brown, John Evers, Cy Young, Joe Tinker, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, John Coombs, Roger Bresnahan, Ed Walsh, Eddie Collins, Nap Lajoie, Rogers Hornsby, Paul Waner, Fred C. Clarke, Tris Speaker, Jim Archer, Al Simmons, Chief Bender, Chief Meyers, Sam Crawford, Mickey Cochrane, Zach Wheat, Arky Vaughan, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Hal Chase, Harry Lord, Harry Davis just to name a few.
Dr. Clarence G. "Doc" Steen, began collecting baseball autographs in 1910 and he collected his entire life passing away in 1965. However, the majority of his collection was obtained between 1910 and the late 1940's. "Doc" Steen sent players photos to sign, most in the form of these premiums, storing them carefully and out of the light. After his passing these signed photos were placed in a safety deposit box where they remained for decades. As a result of this careful handling and storage the majority of his collection are signatures that rate 8-10 on a scale of 1-10. Bidding is now open for this live auction with internet bidding, May 16th, 2015 at 10am.

I'm not sure 'WOW' conveys the full extent of the coolness of that...........

RichardSimon 04-22-2015 12:26 PM

That collection is out of sight.

I enjoy reading the letter from Dr. Steen where he just addresses the player by their last name, ex: Dear Ruth.....was this common practice in the early 1900's?

cool

mighty bombjack 04-22-2015 07:07 PM

Oh my goodness these are striking!

It is one of the best signed items I have seen in a long time. The only one that stops me from saying perfect is Joe Jackson.

David Atkatz 04-22-2015 08:33 PM

The Jackson is listed as being signed by his wife. No deception here.

A stunning and enviable collection. Let us also appreciate the legibility of the signatures , something that we rarely see now.

No. Absolutely not. That would be a terrible idea.

Don't do it.

It would put a lot of money at your disposal to spend on this auction. Which would be bad. So yeah...bad idea.

I still would like some insight as to why Dr. Steen addressed the players in the manner he did in his letters to them:
Dear Ott
Dear Williams

etc...

murphusa 04-23-2015 09:38 AM

My grandfather (born 1891) was a Doctor and he regularly addressed others by their last name

Group Allen & Ginter N28's Added to May 16th Auction

A nice group of 1888 Allen & Ginter N28's have been added to the May 16th auction. These cards were discovered in a scrapbook album dated 1889-89 and have been professionally removed from the album by a paper expert. Because these cards were placed into scrapbook album shortly after issue the fronts are incredibly bright with truly sharp corners also. However, there are glue stains on verso thus the lower overall grades. https://content.liveauctioneers.com/...rian-cap-anson

Wow this is amazing

Geez. Those look like modern reprints. You should post this on the main forum. It would get a lot more exposure to the card guys.

Is there any way I can know the value of these signed M101-2 photos? I would like to bid on some of them but I can't find any on ebay or recent auctions. Are these very rare if they are signed?
