Early Topps Proofs

4 Attachment(s)
I posted on Topps Proofs before, but today I'd like to deal with the earliest Topps proofs only (1960-1970). Following are pictures of the proofs. Instead of my telling you what the proof variations are, I will leave the detective work up to you.

Thanks,
Craig

Topps Proofs

Craig---is the Cimoli blank backed or does it have a finished back ? I think I remember Bob Lemke say he has seen the Cimoli, Hadley and maybe Thronberry with finished backs.

Here is a 1968 Disc proof of Gene Alley that is in my collection. I won it on Ebay I think, many years ago:

This is either a production piece or black process proof of the 1970 Jim Fregosi Candy Lid. The nameplate actually lies below the main image, like in a flipbook. The main image has some transparency to allow this. This is one of my favorite Topps pieces, from the (real) Topps Archives:

Disc Sheet

I "hate" when Al posts that '67 full color disc sheet! It makes me jealous each time I see it...:D

By the way, I agree those Mays pieces are very cool!

For the right price.......

Not sure if this counts...

1969 Topps 4 in 1 uncut. I found these in my father's office in an envelope that led me to believe he picked these up around 1982. It seem he never got to cataloging it in his collection. He has had a few strokes so his memory is a little spotty. He cant remember exactly were these came from. They are blank backed. I have seen the four card versions, but these are new to me.

Proofs

Maybe proofs for the 69 Topps Decals. What size are they ?

Laxcat 05-04-2015 11:28 AM

The sheets measure 3.24 x7 inches. They aren't the same picture as the decals. They appear to be regular 69 topps photos. Ive seen the "cards" that have 4 players on them. We're the 69 4-1's a test issue?

They were a test issue retailed in their own packs. There are 25 "cards" in the set, with 100 subjects, all from the regular issue 3d series as I recall. They are blank backed. Here is my Rose and a proof of it I have, along with a pack. I have a set of both them and the Decals

Here are my Yaz and Shannon, which match yours. Rather that proofs you may have potions of uncut sheets

Cool. After looking at the proofs I agree they are not them. My dad bought up everything he could find that he didn't have in the mid 70's to the early 80's. His collection stopped at 1972 unless it was oddball. This place is a treasure trove of info.

Al,

I'm unsure why I didn't see the uncut sheet before, but is the '74 Topps Deckle Edge blank backed, white back or I guess they call the other one grey back?

You must be a Brooksie collector with all the uncut sheets w/Brooks included!

ALR-bishop 08-29-2015 10:52 AM

74 Deckle

I admit to going somewhat overboard wit this set. I have it completed in
deckled gray back and am 2 cards short of finishing it in deckled white back ( Bowa and Fisk). I also have it done in proof or undeckled cards cut from sheets, a mix of gray and whites. The two proof sheets are blank back grays.

As a set collector I don't collect players per se

Al,

That proof sheet is an awesome piece. If you have some time I'd really like to view your Brooks grey back white back and sheet cut version.

Oh...I was just kidding about you being a Brooks collector (but wouldn't mind adding another one to the fold :D).

Al, do the white backs have gloss that is kind of "tacky" when touched?

Brooks Robinson Deckle

Al,

Thanks so much for posting those Brooksie Deckles. I have one deckle grey and one square non deckled (unsure what the back is). Hope to pick up the white back one day...

You are right, I only have the three Cubs players with white backs in the 1974 Topps Deckle Edge set along with the three gray back versions, but I noticed that the white backs have a sticky, splotchy, and uneven glossy coating on the front. The front of my white back Don Kessinger stuck to the clear plastic sleeve in my binder and now has a few small areas of paper loss after I tried to remove it.

I have one white back and it is tacky.. I suspect the whites were curtailed and replaced by the grays due to this problem.
