Early Goodwin tobacco box thoughts?
6 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I picked up this tobacco box and know basically nothing other than it has a patent date inside of 1856, it is E. Goodwin and Bro which is the earliest name for Goodwin I believe. Box itself is very solid with metal wire hinges still functioning. I haven't been able to locate another like it. Just picked it up today. Is it as rare as I think? I know it's rough but any idea of collectibility or value? Not sure what I want to do with it, any info would help. Thanks

Dennis-Interesting box, thanks for posting it. In the Old Judge Book, we picture a similar box, with different imagery. I think these boxes predate cigarette production. Goodwin and Bros predates Goodwin and Company. Again, we detail the company history in the book. Nice find!

Jay is correct
(of course!) that it pre-dates the packaging in packs. I passed on a similar (or the same) box in around 1995. It was around 150.00. Never seen another. Beat but neat - thanks god there's an inner label to salvage it's appeal.

Thanks for the help guys.

Dennis this is incredible!

Agreed with the others. Really cool box, and I think it's visually appealing (condition aside).

A long shot . . .
Bumping an old 2015 thread in hopes of locating the early Goodwin box featured within. I was able to track the box from Dennis to Jim Manos but then the trail goes cold. Jim doesn't recall who he sold it to but could be a board member. Dennis and Jim were supportive of me bumping this old thread. If you know the location of this box or any Goodwin cartons/boxes I'd love to hear from you (or post here for all to enjoy). Thank You !! detroitwolverines@gmail.com |
