Bearded dragon

Hi all.

I am in the process of scanning a near complete set of 52 Topps and during this process I noticed that there isn't one player in the cards I have that is sporting a beard or even stubble. It would be interesting to see who the first "bearded dragon" was to appear on a Baseball card. Just a fun thing to find out. I am sure in all the collections out there someone has the answer, or at least could post the set and number to see who is the earliest.

For postwar, this is the earliest I could think of off the top of my head. I am sure there are some earlier, but thought I would get it started (besides, I had just posted this card in another thread today so it was ready to go, [emoji4].http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10...59ede3e66b.jpg

If FI've o'clock shadow counts, Zoilo Versalles' 1970 card comes to mind.

I know prewar "The House of David" had the coolest thing going. Here's a great article with one of the best Ruth photos you'll see, lol.

Even in the pre-war days beards were not common post 1900. Mustashes were the thing, and many were sizable and put Rollie to shame.

Post-war, The breaking point seemed to be 74'. Besides the Jackson posted, there are numerous other players with beards in that set. Prior to that year, there were plenty of mutton chops and muttons with 'staches, however they never touched and were their own separate entity.

If someone can show me anything prior to 74' I really want to see it.

I don't think you can say there was a first card as there really is just a first set to include them...74.

PS - Hey Dave,

I didn't forget about the watch, my scanner took a dive and it has really been a lackadasical search for a new one. :( I will get you those scans sir.

This is the earliest card I thought of with a beard:

Good question. I have a follow up question. What is the first postwar card with a visible tattoo?

Earliest I can think of without going too crazy is Richie Allen in 1971. Must be someone earlier than that.

Right. I find it interesting because the artist could have easily left it off.

Saw him over the weekend and he is back to the full beard, albeit much grayer than it was then.
