Collecting Goals, YOY

I always enjoy looking back at my goals rom the year before and seeing how I made out.

Goals for 2018:
1. Get my PB Williams for completion check
2. '37 Goudey Thum Movie Medick for completion check
3. Pick up 4 Diamond Stars Hi #'s (currently have 1/12) completely finished
4. Add five T3s to my set check
5. NOT START ANY MORE SETS!!! amazingly enough, I managed not to

2019 Goals:
1. Finish my 1908 Rose Comic PC set (currently 7/8)
2. Finish my T51 Baseball set (currently 6/8)
3. Go through my collection and cut the fat
4. Make a set (or 3) out of the case of '90 Donruss sitting in my office....I love those stupid borders
5. Other than goals 1 and 2, not spend a single dime for the whole year

Here's the link to last year's thread if you want to chime in:

I did pretty well on my goals this year.

1 almost completed my T205 Cubs reverse set. Have 148/151 so now looking for upgrades

2 completed a T206 Cubs front collection

3 sold my W572 set through Heritage

4 enjoyed my E121-80 and E121-120 Yankees Giants World Series set

2019 goals

Upgrade T205 Cubs collection with better cards

2019 collecting goals

Tough to follow my 2017 pickups.

In 2018, I was able to complete my catcher card run in the T205 set, and I also picked up the last Chief Meyers T202s I was looking for to complete the 10 card subset of different Meyers T202s.

I also picked up all but three of the catchers in the P2 set.

Again modest goals for 2019:

Work on the last three P2 pins I need: Mclean LL, Schmidt LL, Art Wilson (Giants)

Perhaps finish my catcher card run in 1912 Zeenuts: Claude Berry.

Perhaps finish my catcher card run in the 1912 Home Run Kisses: Ralph Kreitz.

Top of the list: 1912 T207 Irving Lewis, Red Munson Old Mill Cabinet, and Johnny Kling Plow Boy Tobacco cabinet.

Happy New Year to all.

Patrick

My '18 Goals:

1953 Topps Set Complete - Bought in April
1952 Bowman Set Not Yet Purchased, but I have made connection and plan to purchase at bonus time in March '19
70's Basketball and Football Sets Purchased '73-74 and 72-73 at the National in Cleveland this year

Also purchased a '64 Topps Giant.
I got a few upgrades that I had been hoping for - '57 Ted Williams, '58 Brooks Robinson, 65 and 66 Sandy Koufax, plus got me entire '53 Bowman Color set upgraded to at least Ex - and I love the way it now looks in the binder.

'18 was the least I had spent on cards since getting back into the hobby in 2012. As the years get older, the sets get more expensive, the conversations about the purchases with the Mrs. get longer, and the trips to the mailbox become less frequent. I really miss the days when I would get 2-3 packages a day. My wife used to apologize to the mail lady.

'19 will be a critical year. If I don't stay diligent and get '52 Bowman and '48 Bowman plus some additional Football and Basketball sets, I will become less and less engaged and I could see the hobby start to take the back seat to life and falling short on my goal of the post war Topps/Bowman/Fleer.

Happy Collecting!

2018 was another good year.
1. Finished my t205 set
2. Picked up several new Clemente cards for my master set.
3. Failed to find a 1914 CJ Wagner that appealed to me, so settled for a 1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 7 upgrade.

I will continue to look for Clemente cards and hope to add at least one big "waterfront property" card to my general collection.

Conor - Very impressive, I don't think I have ever seen someone stick to all their goals for the year, nicely done. Focus is a good thing.

It looks like the 4 previous posters all did fairly well with their goals, I love checking things off. I have sold more stuff and bought more stuff in the last year than any year. Sold my CJ set, all my extra CJs, most of my t206s and a couple other items as I started with around 260 cards in the collection. I think I did alright, wallet is just thin though.

1. Finish my pc796 - done and with a couple nice upgrades. Id love to upgrade my Plank, someday.
2. Add the centerpiece to my collection - big check, 1915 Boston PC
3. Add something historic - another big check, 1910 weiser wonder WaJo pc
4. Add something significant from WaJo - check, see #3
5. Keep the budget intact - big fail, see item #1-3

2019 goals
1. Spend no money until POST REA on the hobby
2. Trim the fat and get the collection to 50 cards, sitting on 59 and know the 9 that will go
3. Continue to connect to the hobby through individual correspondence
4. Make the plunge into photos, I really have started to dig them.
5. Read

We need some cards here, like a previous poster mentioned, the packages come with big gaps of time in between...miss those eBay Sunday nights and all the stuff that would come in constantly. Heres my 2019 highlights:

2018

2018 was a total disaster for my collection. My goal has always been to get to 50 unique signed poses of T206 cards. Heading into 2017, I was at 44. All I said was...

In May, I had my "one signed T206 pose" that I didn't already own -- this "Doc" White from the Steiner Auction of Tom Marsilio's TTM autograph collection:

But, of course, the year didn't end -- and my collection took a massive hit when unsigned versions of 4 of those poses were discovered by Manny and the rest of the Net54 investigation team. So, I'm back down to 41.

But I haven't given up hope! For next year, I repeat my standard line...

2019 will be a wild success if I can add just one signed T206 pose that I don’t already own to my collection.

2018 was ok for me...unfortunately I was not able to add any new Dots Millers to my run...but I was able to finally complete my e94 murray color run...and I added maybe 7 babe ruth cards to my collection.

tachyonbb 12-21-2018 09:19 AM

Retired private school teacher here, no pension just social security, part time job and investment income. My goals reflect my financial status.
2018
Finish 1960 Topps set (done)
Add 10 T206 cards to collection (done)
Complete run of Omaha Cardinals programs. Down to 2 1947 and 1956. Did not run across either this year.

2019
Pick another Topps set to collect. Still trying to decide which year.
Add 5 T206 cards to collection
Finish Omaha Cardinals program.

2019 Goals- finishing a few sets

Find the last 2 #%$&* E91a's that I need, Bender and Oldring
'34-'36 Diamond Stars- upgrading about a dozen
'51 Redback panel with Feller/Holmes
'58 Hires Test- just getting one of the 3 left would be great

'53 Canadian exihibits, need about 25, would like to make a dent
K Bats- pick up 1-3 more
N162- pick up 1-3 more

That being said, I"m sure something else will catch my eye and I"ll have a similar list next year.

x2drich2000 12-21-2018 10:05 AM

Pretty Good year for me overall

2018
1) Finish my e93 set - still looking for a nice lower grade Cobb - always outbid
2) Add at least 4 more cards to my e92 Nadja set. Currently need 16 to complete the set of known cards. Currently have a lead on 1. - Added 4 including Wagner (batting), McGraw, Knight, and Bemis x3
3) Add 1 or 2 more of the harder/more expensive cards to the T222 set such as a Henry, Alexander, Shulte, Magee, etc - Picked up a Leibold
4) Add another E92 Red Crofts Candy, Menagerie, or Prizefighter - Added a Red Croft Davis
5) Pick up an M110, T3 top tier HOFer, N566, N142, or similar - Added a N142 Nash
6) Add another back to my E/T Young backrun - Nope, nothing

2019 goals are pretty much the same as 2018

Thanks, Steven. I lack a lot of qualities, but focus when it comes to goals isn't one of them. It's so easy to stray in this hobby, but I've found the trick is to stay off the auction sites and not look at catalogs until the auction is over.

Being from Boston, I'm super jealous of that postcard. I saw it in some catalog (forget which one) and started drooling. Kudos on the great addition!

Republicaninmass 12-21-2018 05:30 PM

2018*goals

Add 5 new cards including one hofer*added 5, and Durocher for HOF

Sell duplicates and others in my sell pilepile got bigger

egri 12-22-2018 03:19 PM

I’m not sure if I ever set my 2018 goals. My 2019 goals are to add the last Red Sox I need for my project (Dizzy Trout—I was underbidder on the one in Clean Sweep last year and haven’t seen another), and to get to 250 overall.

PowderedH2O 12-22-2018 03:30 PM

I am collecting football and basketball complete sets from 1952-73. I completed a few football sets in 2018. I am doing 10% per year through 2025. I am on pace at 40%+ for all but one set (53 Bowman) and I am way over that number for many sets. By the end of 2019 I hope to complete more sets and get the number to 50% or higher. Closest sets to finish include 58 Topps baseball (8 cards- nothing too expensive), 57 Topps football (18 cards), and 67 Topps football (18 cards as well).

I am also working on collecting 10 graded cards for every set that interests me beyond that. That includes basketball and hockey, plus baseball 1909-1951. This year I added graded Exhibit cards of Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, Johnson, Alexander, Johnson, and about 25 more to my collection. I also grabbed a bunch of graded R cards and oddballs. 2018 worked. Hopefully 2019 will be as kind.

Rich Falvo 12-22-2018 08:06 PM

2018
1. Find a few cards for my T206 Providence team set. -Made almost no progress here. Added only one card. Finding the missing Tolstoi/AB/EPDG/Cycle backs turning out to be harder than I thought.
2. Start and get half of a low-grade Sport Kings set. -Made very good progress here, getting 37 of the 48.

2019
1. Finish the Sport Kings set.
2. Add two or three cards for the T206 Provdence set including at least one Tolstoi.

glchen 01-22-2019 05:08 PM

Steven, awesome pickups in 2018! I wish I could have a year like you! :)

So, I'm really late on this, but I've liked doing this every year. Here are the goals from 2018: Link

2018 Goals:

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards. I've been able to save up some funds this past year, so I would like to pick up one "huge" card this coming year. Would love to get a T210 Jackson although that card is probably still beyond my means. The Cracker Jack Cobb is still very high on my list also. Partial check? I really didn't pick up the one "huge" card that I was looking for. My highlight of the year was probably a 1925-29 Universal Toy Ruth card that most folks probably have never heard of. I did pick up another Headin' Home Ruth, a 1922 E121 Ruth Photo Montage, and a 1928 Star Player Candy Ruth (very trimmed), so can't really complain. Finally, I sold my M101-6 Ruth (NY) and my E122 Ruth.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-2, W521, W590). Check. Picked up a W519 Type 2 Collins and a W590 Gehrig.

2019 Goals:

Going to be more of the same as the last few years.

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards. Also, still looking for that one "huge" card this coming year.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-2, W521, W590).

Way to hang in there after the big investigation. Kudos for that.

I had no goals for 2018 so met them fine.
I have no goals for 2019 so it should be another good year. One think I don't want to do buy things I already have (done a few times) and quit trying to upgrade and failing at it.

I haven't seen anyone post their 2020 goals yet and the New Year is right around the corner. Here's mine from last year and how I did.

2019 goals
1) Finish my e93 set - still have not found one I like, but have starting to actually look
2) Add at least 4 more cards to my e92 Nadja set. - Actually took a little bit of a step back as two additional cards were confirmed and I think I only added 1 new card (Crawford)
3) Add 1 or 2 more of the harder/more expensive cards to the T222 set such as a Henry, Alexander, Shulte, Magee, etc - nothing
4) Add another E92 Red Crofts Candy, Menagerie, or Prizefighter - Don't believe any came up for sale.
5) Pick up an M110, T3 top tier HOFer, N566, N142, or similar - nothing
6) Add another back to my E/T Young backrun - Added the E105

While I missed most of my goals in 2019, it was still a pretty good year adding a T216 Wagner, Cocoa Wagner, D303 Mothers Bread Plank, W.W. Smith Wagner postcard, T216 VE Tinker, and T206 Mathewson and Young portraits.

2020 goals

1) Pick up an E93 Cobb
2) Add another E92 red croft, menagerie, or prizefighter
3) Add 2 more cards to the E92 Nadja Set
4) Add another back to my E/T Young backrun (preferable a T216)
5) Finish my Davis backrun (need cocoa and maybe black candy)
6) Add another Wagner, Cobb, and maybe Ruth

conor912 12-30-2019 10:30 AM

Kind of a mixed bag this year, but started getting into Ruth era Red Sox photography, so not surprising.

2019 Goals:
1. Finish my 1908 Rose Comic PC798-14 set (currently 7/8) Nope - turns out this last one is a killer to find
2. Finish my T51 Baseball set (currently 6/8) Complete
3. Go through my collection and cut the fat Doing that next summer for the WSSCA show
4. Make a set (or 3) out of the case of '90 Donruss sitting in my office....I love those stupid borders Opened the entire case, made 7 sets and gave away 6 to people just to piss them off. I think my retinas are permanently damaged from the orange backs.
5. Other than goals 1 and 2, not spend a single dime for the whole year Massive fail, but who was I kidding in the first place?

2020 Goals:
1. Finish my 1908 Rose Comic PC798-14 set (currently 7/8) - need "The Score Is Tied"
2. Add six T3 HOFers to my set (currently at 56/100)
3. Find a creative way to get rid of this last '90 Donruss set
4. Finally admit to myself that I'm never going to finish my T205s and let them go
5. Put more effort into my hobby friendships

Vintagecatcher 12-30-2019 11:16 AM

2019...A slow year!

2019 was a pretty slow year for me. I did add 2 of the last 3 catcher P2 pins I needed. Added some more t210 Old Mills. Finished my catcher S74 silk run. Started a CATCHER pin collection.

Biggest pickup was my recent E125 Art Wilson purchase from REA so I need only a Bill Carrigan to complete my E125 catcher run. Pretty much added a few odd and ends...T205s, T206, my first E102, a few more T3s.

No real goals 2020 other than adding a few CATCHER POSITION PINS.

I expect another quiet year as my collecting winds down.

Happy New Year,

Patrick

mattsey9 12-30-2019 12:38 PM

2019 saw me add my first T3, and complete my 1969T set.

2020 will see me working on a 1956T set and looking for 1900s Cubs postcards. Would like to finish up my T42/T43 Birds set if possible. Also working with my son on his latest obsession, the 2019 Pokémon Cosmic Eclipse card set. He's got a Full Art Piplup ready to send to PSA! :)
