1938 Dixie Lids

Does anyone have or know of a list that charts what players are available with what backs/brands?

Leon 11-11-2019 09:09 AM

I will wager 22 cents that this kind of list exists in some old hobby publication. I have seen a ton of old timer lists in old time publications over the years. I just don't know exactly which one right now.

..Pre-War-Cards , the blog , has a list of forty .-- Search '' checklist dixie lids'' on Dogpile Search Engine..good hunting... I use "Dogpile" for anything truly obscure.

Ha. Yeah, I'm staring at my run of VCBC thinking the same thing, hoping to narrow the search by asking first.

Thanks, Mike. It's a good start!

Google search "dixie lids checklist" brings up several sites with information.

You're right, just not the information I want.

My understanding is the 4 Baseball subjects in 2 sizes were issued. So are you asking how many different backs each of the 4 (or 8) subjects have been cataloged?

This is an example of a large 1937 Gabby Harnett and a small 1938 Jimmy Foxx. Backs are both from different ice cream retailers. Prewar sportscards had a list of 42 different backs. Again my understanding is you could find each of the 4 subjects from 1938 with each of the backs and both of the sizes. But some backs are scarce and not all 8 might be known. Might be interesting to put together a master list but I dont know if it has been done already.

Thanks, Jonathan. Yes, I was curious if the hobby knew if all 8 players came with all the brands or not. It sounds like you're saying that, assuming 42 is a comprehensive back list, then that would put a master set at of all combos at 336?

bigfanNY 11-12-2019 06:12 PM

Below is the list of backs from prewar sportscards,The numbers next to the names are how many cards from each back the author found . The article was written in December 2018. Like Leon and others I remember seeing other lists. Being such a small set with an obscure size they have never been extremely popular but I agree that an ongoing master list would be helpful. Maybe just start a new thread asking folks to respond with the dixie lids they own or have pictures of and start there. ( And you can start with the 2 I sent)

Good luck
Jonathan

And Leon's sheet looks like a new back for the list.

Thanks, guys - Leon's is not one I previously had on my list and I will gladly add it. Given how many I was able to find and how many I saw in such small quantities, I am certain there are more. If anyone can provide a photo of any others, please let me know.

Isn't a whole lot of the fun looking for stuff we haven't seen yet, or very rarely see?

more from my past collection...(hope members don't mind, some folks don't see these that often)

I've never seen a complete list of Dixie combos. Or even a complete list of backs. Here's a few more, to put the count to 54: Bang, Golden State, Luick, Medo-Land, Netherland, Peek-a-Boo, Swift, Teall's, Tilly, Velvet Brand Arctic, & Wiseman Farms. And the Sunfreeze can be found in red or blue. And I'm sure there are more brands out there...

This is a very interesting thread. I've been working on a run of these backs for the Bronko Nagurski and Sammy Baugh lids for quite some time now and have close to 20.

The only one I have that has not yet been mentioned is this one that unfortunately has paperloss and I can't tell what the name of the dairy actually is.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Glen and Jeff - appreciate the additions. Jeff, I am not familiar with that one but if I see anything on it, I will try to remember to let you know.

This brand is Looney's. Looks like there is at least a vanilla and strawberry back!

I've been working on a list of 1938 Bob Feller
Dixie Lids as well. I am aware of a few more backs and will try to post shortly.

Hey Glen -

Meant to ask, are these backs for the 1937 and 1938 sets or are they for other years? The tally I am keeping on that page is for only those sets as those are the pre-war ones with baseball/football players. There are later sports ones and later ones featuring movie stars but I wasn't cataloging those.

I could perhaps add a running list of the other ones as well. But I wanted to keep those separate if possible.

Those were all 1938 baseball players.

Cozumeleno 11-17-2019 05:05 PM

Thank you, Glen - much appreciated. I will add all to the list.

bigfanNY 11-18-2019 05:41 PM

Will you seperate the 37 and 38 backs? And which backs have large and small know examples? I collected them for a little while before internet 1976 - 1978 and I built a few sets. The large ones were always more difficult to come accross and 37's seemed to come up less often tha 38's. Good luck I will see if I have my old notes on backs I came across during my search.

Hi Jonathan -

Ideally, I would. In hindsight, I should have probably done that from the start. But I didn't save images of all the ones I found when I did my initial count and doing that much work again gives me a headache just thinking about it. It would be great to have that information but would require a lot of work to go back and try to hunt down all of the images again.

brianp-beme 11-18-2019 08:13 PM

Great info everyone. Definitely a group of cards that, even after years of PreWW2 collecting, I barely knew existed, and to think that are so many different brands out there and that info on this set is still incomplete and new examples popping up still...how fun!

Brian

Haha. I’ll take “Projects I need like a stick in the eye” for 500, Alex. I’ve already had to defend my wrapper collection to my wife, who is firmly in the “you literally bought garbage” camp.

It’s funny, the whole reason this even came up was that I rediscovered a nice Sunfreze porcelain sign I found years back and thought it would be cool to do just a Sunfreze baseball set. I’ve never even seen that red Sunfreze back until Gleny posted it, so now I’m even less sure of what to do. Down the rabbit hole we go!!

Thought I'd bump this thread as I found a Dixie Lid back that was not on our list of known backs.

Couple questions if anyone knows:

1. I have a 1937 Large Gehringer, and I saw the large Hartnett in this thread. But I haven't seen a Large Size from 1938. Do those exist?

2. For the Large Size, does it seem that the same backs were printed, or is that checklist possibly more limited?

I'm thinking about doing some sort of back project with the HOFers from either both sets, or maybe just 1937. Thanks for any help.

Did somebody stamp the word "chocolate" on afterwards? It looks like it to me. Does anyone else have a Town Talk back? I would like to compare it to this one.
