1990 (and 1989) Upper Deck Erased “Errors”

For those who remember the hobby back then, particularly dealer tables and shows from 1990ish, you may recall seeing these phony variations where someone took an eraser to areas of 1989 and 1990 UD cards. Always to black ink areas of the card.

Usually the names on front but sometimes the entire stat area on the backs of 1990s. Very obvious when held in person, under a light source. Often times very sloppy and you see evidence of the eraser.

Until recently, maybe one will pop up on eBay every year. Now I’m seeing several being listed by various sellers over the last week or two on eBay. No huge sales but still odd. Perhaps this “trick” has been rediscovered or a bunch of “vintage” ones have resurfaced?

With what we've seen happen with vintage cards, my concern would be these cheap erasures getting resurfaced and then suddenly appearing "legit."

What about the 1990 Upper Deck baseball with the no copyright on the back? I have seen other websites list this as a legit error, but since it also falls into the eraser category, is it possible it is not a printing error?

They are definitely legitimate. I’ve pulled them several times from sealed wax boxes. These erased cards show the surface gloss smeared/removed and are matte in the eraser area. The copyright cards are not. They also only affect cards 101-199.
