Mayo Cut Plug on Auction Ninja -- opinions?
This closed a day or two ago at $220 — I thought it looked like a repro, though hard to tell in photos. A little trimmed for sure! The auction house defended it in a private note, and I became less sure that it was a repro.
Was anyone following this? I thought the half-tone printing looked too modern and the age-ing was suspect, but the black back looks real enough. And maybe the half-tone is just as modern-looking in the original, I have never handled a Mayo Cut Plug in person. https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=29540 https://www.auctionninja.com/past-to-present-ct/product/estate-fresh-1895-mayo-cut-plug-mike-griffin-3154.html |
I think it's authentic. The Mayo were amongst the earliest halft-tone baseball cards.

I was going to bid on it last night, had issues with the bidding process and lost some bids. I had placed many bids before 8PM as stated, even sent an email before hand. I am trying to delete my CC from the system, so I had to send an email for that as well - anyways the card looks okay!
Happy Bidding! |
Thanks both — it was the half-tone that really made me suspicious, and now I know more about when that process came into use for cards. (Those evenly rounded corners did not help with first impressions.)
