Trivia you should know without looking it up

Not that hard to find so please do not post if you look it up, but even if you do, you may be wrong.:D

What team and in what year had the most players on their roster who never had a plate appearance?

D. Bergin 08-19-2022 11:56 AM

Without looking it up, I'd guess one of the teams during the 2020 Pandemic season.

No idea who, so I'll just guess Yankees, because I know they made plenty of use of the Scranton to NY pitcher shuttle on a regular basis, but I doubt I'm right.

I would have guessed an expansion team... how about the 1976 Toronto Blue Jays?

frankbmd 08-19-2022 12:25 PM

The 2020 Yankees is not corrected

No one came to the plate for the 1976 Blue Jays.
Their first year in the league was 1977.:D
But 1977 is incorrect as well.;)

The 1968 Yale Bulldogs? :D

They had two dozen but are not the highest.

Hint: This is a prewar team if you consider the Ukrainian conflict a war.:eek::D

If it’s a 2020 team like I suspect, I’m pretty sure I know who it is just by scanning the roster numbers that season. That could be considered looking it up, so I won’t say who I suspect it is. If it’s not a 2020 team, I have no idea who it might be.

Not sure why you think it's a team from 2020, since it was only a 60-games schedule...unless, Frank is being sly again and there were a bunch still on the roster, but not playing because of the virus.

However, I was 'assuming' Frank was talking about what constitutes 'active rosters'.

.

Short season but expanded rosters with very little or no minor league baseball being played at the time.

I'm going to say it's AL because of DH. I'm guessing Rays. It seems like they use every pitcher in their system and have a lot of injuries. Maybe 2019? (seems like it coulda been last year too, but I think it was a record of most unique batting orders in history?)

NL had no DH in 2020.

(Meant to say, had a DH that season)

I remember reading the Mariners used a record 42 pitchers in 2018 or 2019, so I would guess them.

Ah, you might be on to something there. Thought I had it. Guess not.

Originally I thought the 2019 Mariners with 29 players without a plate appearance was the answer, but it has been pointed out to me that the 2020 Marlins had 36 players without plate appearances. I have been unable to find another team with 30 or more such players.

Therefore the 2020 Marlins are the top team and it isn't even close.

I realize this is no distinction and if anybody really cares, I would question their sanity.

And thanks for not cheating.

NL had the DH in 2020 so that makes sense.

Guess it was not so easy "without looking it up" unless we got hints and talked thru it.

Great Question :D:D:D

D. Bergin 08-22-2022 06:37 AM

Ah, inter-league play…that’s why the Mariners didn’t get it. So my first suspicion was right…at least for now.

That threw me too lol

Now that we have the universal DH, someone will likely pass the Marlins.
