House of David

Leland's catalog has a cool House of David game worn jersey but refers to the House of David as "a sect of orthodox Jews." Incorrect. While they certainly bore more than a passing similiarity to Orthodox Jews in appearance, they were a Christian community.

Don't know why errors like this annoy me but they do. Like if this is wrong . . . .what else is wrong. . . .

On that note, Happy Easter and Passover to all celebrating.

It annoyed me too, but sometimes you just...... :D

Famous professional players occasionally donned fake beards and joined the team for games, including Grover Cleveland Alexander, Satchel Paige, and even Babe Ruth.(They considered signing the Sultan of Swat in 1934, but decided his hedonistic lifestyle would be a poor fit for the ascetic team.)

In Alexander's movie, The Winning Team, Old Pete actually makes a joke about having a beard. Before their series against the Yankees, there's a cartoon with him portrayed as an old bearded man and he comments about not even donning one while playing for The House of David!

I spent a lot of time at The House of David in the early 70's before it completely dissolved.

Fun place. Amusement park, penny arcade, amphitheater. Never saw the baseball team. Ended long before my time. I do have a ticket stub from one of their games, though.

Surprised there hasn't been a major documentary film about them. Would be fascinating.

Toni Stone, one of three Negro League Women players, also played for the House of David
