How many Joe Jackson cards do you own?

Tangent to the most collected players thread, curious about this even as to the membership here.

1. None
2. 1
3. 2-4
4. 5-9
5. 10 or more.

J. Jackson

just one.

All I own is a beautiful mid-1990s MegaCards Charles Conlon color card of Joe as an Indian, and feel glad I own that.;) --- Brian Powell

Zero. Even the game and strip cards are astronomical for a regular persons collection. I would be surprised if you told me more than a handful of people started a Joe Jackson collection and added multiple cards in the last year.

I think there are 4 or 5 Jackson playing days cards TOTAL on ebay. Whoever the people are hoarding them are really not helping hobbyists.

I don't think it's hoarding per say. I think there are literally just not that many playing days cards out there. Also, in a subtext of hoarding, if you have just one that you bought a decade or more back...it stays due to the difficulty of replacement at today's cost.

I have only owned a single Joe Jax playing days card in 40+ years of collecting which I sold. I don't think I will likely ever have another.

jimq16415 06-15-2023 03:12 PM

The only one I have is a T-200 of the Cleveland Naps so I love when people share their cards I could never have.

mrreality68 06-15-2023 03:37 PM

I have 11 but I am a Jackson Addict. But it is tough to have alot of his cards since he is not as many sets as other players in part because he was banned. In addition with low supply, high demand it means even the cheaper cards are no longer cheap so many collectors get priced out. Even the Fatima Team Card of his is not cheap anymore

I own 6 Joe Jackson items, 3 of which are minor league items, all pictured below (I used to own two other m101-4/5s but traded them).

I don’t think many people own many Joe items because (1) very few exist / just not many cards/items of Joe Jax, and (2) what cards he does have tend to be expensive to super-expensive.

I don’t think Joe Jackson is, at large, a “most collected” player. However, I do think his items are top 10 (maybe top 5) “most coveted”

I think 10 guys or more identified him as one of the most collected players on the other thread, which is why I started the poll to see if that really was so as I was very doubtful. As the OP I should mention I own these two, if you call these cards LOL.

rand1com 06-15-2023 03:51 PM

Well you obviously got most of the top ones!

You obviously got some of his best ones in nice collectible condition.

Great minds, Peter! I do call them cards and those are the two I have!

I do find it interesting as some people don't think they're cards. Not sure I get it as it is a baseball player and it is a card. One of these days I do hope to add an e90-1 but that may be a ways off!!

In my uneducated experience they are cards (just as we now treat Postcards as cards)

and you both have a nice set of both the 1913 and the 1914.

Casey2296 06-15-2023 04:21 PM

Ryan, I never get tired of seeing your T210 Jackson.

Exhibitman 06-15-2023 04:29 PM

None for me. I know it is practically N54 heresy, but I am not interested in any cards of Jackson. I believe that Jackson was dirty, and a perjurer to boot.

Rhotchkiss 06-15-2023 04:35 PM

Thanks all.

Troy, those are quite literally cards!! They are playing cards, but cards none the less.

BobbyStrawberry 06-15-2023 05:12 PM

Zero, and that won't change anytime soon.

jayshum 06-15-2023 05:20 PM

Do the 2 T202s that Jackson is claimed to be on the center panel of count? If so then I have 3 including those and the T200 Cleveland Naps card.

none, only because he (as far as I can approximate), is not involved with a no-no.

i'm pretty sure i do not own any. prices are cray cray. I'd rather have ruth anyway!!!!!

I misspoke! I have an uncut w552 strip which features anonymous players depicted for various positions. Many have been linked to photos of Hofer's such as hughie jennings, honus wagner...and Shoeless Joe by golly.

ullmandds 06-15-2023 07:29 PM

jeff and ryan have them all!!!

FrankWakefield 06-15-2023 09:01 PM

I picked up on the distinction that Peter noted when he started this, Jackson isn't among the most collected cards here, for reasons that have subsequently been noted.

I have a fairly nice (for me) W514.

I have had 3 Jackson's over the years. The first was a T200 premium. A big, beautiful object in fragile, rough condition. Jackson was about as tall as your hand. The second was an E90-1, with the colors slightly out of registration. And the W514.

Obviously, once Landis has him out of baseball, then Jackson isn't going to be in those later sets... I respect Landis' decision on all of them. After a LOT of reading I'm satisfied that he should stay out of the Hall. And I think he was among the best left handed hitters who ever played the game.

Part of Jacksons popularity is the fact that he was so good, maybe the best, people love a tragic romance along with the Black Sox notoriety makes him a perfect collectible.
Personal opinion, if we're going to let knuckleheads like Selig in, might as well let JoJax in.

No Joe Jax cards for me, but I do have this Play Ball notebook/writing tablet with Joe on the cover that I'm willing to trade for something I'd rather have, such as a notebook with WaJo on the cover that I don't have.

Does just the T202 middle panel of this (most likely) Joe count?

Really interesting thread!! Am I the only one who is shocked that a large majority of the board does not own a JJ card? I would have thought that percentage would have been significantly lower. I do not feel he is in the top 10 of most collected players but this poll was an eye opener.

tonyo 06-16-2023 06:33 AM

zero for me and I've never really understood the massive appeal. don't even really find his cards visually appealing as a general rule. The E90-1 would be a very cool card to me if it weren't for the lipstick.

I did think that triple he hit at the end of eight men out was pretty cool though!

Snapolit1 06-16-2023 06:51 AM

Paying six figures for a Jackson playing era card strikes me as a little loco.

Paying $30,000 for a card from 1940, 20 years after he retired, strikes me as certifiably insane.

Lobo Aullando 06-16-2023 11:24 AM

And that large majority is probably incredibly understated.

(Personally, I'm not counting that Conlon card from the early 90s.)

darwinbulldog 06-16-2023 12:56 PM

Um, let's just say a nice round number.

Rhotchkiss 06-16-2023 01:11 PM

The only mainstream sets Joe Jackson was in are e90-1 (and those are tougher to find), 1914-15 Cracker Jack, and M101-4/5+; and the 1917 sets but those are all so rare that you can’t call them mainstream. Even though he played in the majors in 1910 and beyond (and some a bit before that), he is not in t205, t206, t207, D304, T3, e93, e94, e98, e105, t201, e103, M116, t213-6, etc. Besides CJs, very little was made from 1913-15 and little was made from 1917–1919.

Thus, not very many issues were made over the course of his (shortened) career, he is in few of the mainstream issues of his time, and what Joe Jackson items exist are pretty darn expensive - because they are desirable. For all those reasons, it’s tough to collect Joe Jackson.

I agree he is not one of the most “collected” players, vintage or modern, not by a long shot. But he is one of the most coveted, and thanks to those who don’t want him, making it less people us collectors have to deal with.

The Pinkerton Joe Jackson, The Boston Garter Joe Jackson, the Texas Tommy Joe Jackson, and the Felix Mendelssohn Joe Jackson are cards I would love to have but those are like Unicorns

The E270 Tin Top of him is also unicornish.

Brian (not mine, absolutely not, too unicorny)

Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson were hard to come by, sought after and expensive in the early 80's to the early 90's. I remember paying more for a Jacksons than most other cards, Goudey Ruth, E Wagner, E Cobb, even 52 Mantle similar price in a 7 to a CJ Jackson in a 4 back in the 80's
