Paging oddball Cleveland Collectors for an assist on IDing an item
1 Attachment(s)
Have an odd Bob Feller piece - design looks similar to the 1949 Cleveland Indians Display photos, except a) at 14" x 21" it's considerably larger and b) it's not the same pose. Stock is similar to exhibit stock, but a little lighter. Any ideas?

It's a Carling's Black Label Beer issue. It was a one-year issue, different from the ones issued over a number of years. My guess is they were meant to display in bars. Always struck me odd that there was no Black Label advertising on them.

Thank you! Full disclosure - there was a small note with it that said Carling's Black Label, but I assumed that couldn't be right because of the lack of advertising, lol.

Carling Black Label Cleveland Indians Posters
These are amazing and I still know very little about them. I believe they originate with Carling Black Label Beer, possibly 1955-56, and were likely used as store displays as described to advertise in Bars and such. I have also seen pics of these large posters decorating a Cleveland-area storefront during the 1950s. There are at least two different versions of the Al Lopez and Bob Feller posters, leading me to believe that there may be 2 or more posters sets. Some of the other players include: Roberto Avila, Jim Busby, Mike Garcia, Art Houtteman, Bob Lemon, Don Mossi, Al Smith, George Strickland, Gene Woodling, Early Wynn.
Nice find! |
How’s does one determine who an oddball collector is? lol
