June 9, 1914: Wagner's 3000th hit // Share yours

Wagner collected his 3000th hit 110 years ago today.

Share your cards and photos.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...agneho01.shtml

"On June 9, 1914, Wagner’s ninth-inning double off the Phillies’ Erskine Mayer at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl gave him 3,000 hits for his career. At that point, only Cap Anson – then credited with 3,047 hits – had reached that plateau in big league games.

The Tuesday afternoon crowd gave Wagner an ovation after the hit and when he subsequently scored Pittsburgh’s only run in a 3-1 loss."

Some early Wags, including one from about 1897. And one from 1909.

Paul, that cabinet is great. I was so torn consigning that one. Enjoy it!!

Accomplished, but I was not able to correct his bowlegged-ness. Nor was I fast enough.

You'll be able to post this again in 19 days if you want. Wagner actually collected his 3,000th hit on June 28, 1914 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, with Pete Schneider on the mound.

The difference in date comes from an early error in his hit totals, which led people to believe he collected his 3,000th hit on June 9, 1914. In reality, that was hit 2,990 he collected that day, a double off of Erskine Mayer.

The numbers were updated at a much later date, which lowered Wagner from 3,430 career hits down to 3,420 (there was also a brief time many years ago when his hit total was believed to be 3,415, but research corrected that). The extra ten ghost hits added to his earlier total were stats from prior to 1914, which changed his actual 3,000th hit date to almost three weeks later.

Brian (but not before I show this Orange Border Honus Wagner, and a D381 Pete Schneider from the web)

Sure looks that way, right? I found this from a Times Leader article:

Quote:

Honus Wagner walked the streets of Dawson Springs in those days, and managed to pull together a rag-tag bunch of youth for some pick-up baseball, and life instruction. He called them his “Young Recruits.” Wagner and his Pirate mates were good to the town of Dawson Springs, and could be found at many local gatherings. Wagner and his buddies often fished at the Mill Dam, right beside Riverside Park, walking the short distance from the New Century Hotel to the banks of Tradewater.

Always wished I had worked on this run a bit more 10+ years ago when I got most of these, when it was more affordable to do so!

Interesting info on the 3000 hit date, great excuse to bring all these pieces back in a little while. My only Wagner at the moment although getting very fond of his various postcards.

Some folks allow that this 1912 Robert Robinson postcard (and magazine cover) image is a likeness of Wagner. Am on the fence myself.

FrankWakefield 06-10-2024 06:49 PM

Paul... Wow.

It brings to mind the scene in the movie M*A*S*H, when Hawkeye and Duke offer a martini to newly almost met Trapper John in the tent, in Korea. Trapper John looks at the martini and asks about the olive. Duke responds "where the hell do you think you are," Hawkeye says "we're three miles from the front." Trapper John says something about how "a man really can't savor a martini without an olive." Or something close to all of that.

Paul's version: "You can't really savor your Wagner cards unless they're signed."

I shake my head in awe and admiration.
