Rea 1933 Goudey Gehrig

This psa 8 33 Gehrig is in REA’s auction:

There is no disclaimer in the description but what is going on on the whole right hand side of the card? Is that a scan issue?

Beercan collector 08-06-2024 06:15 PM

Looks to be a print defect .
Sometimes PSA will award high grades despite poor registration .

JollyElm 08-06-2024 06:19 PM

Yeah, the 'faded' area doesn't affect the copyright letters directly below it (or anything else for that matter), so that's a good indication it's not some sort of 'fade-out' scanner issue, but a print defect.

ullmandds 08-06-2024 06:45 PM

thats a pretty generous 8

Jobu 08-06-2024 10:02 PM

Looks like someone erased something.

Lorewalker 08-07-2024 03:01 AM

This would be another great example of someone buying the holder and not the card...a Set Registry motivated buyer.

Republicaninmass 08-07-2024 08:14 AM

Gone... with the tape.

ullmandds 08-07-2024 08:40 AM

the more i look at the card...the more issues I see. I dont like the corners...or the whole rt side...weird circles top rt...lookss water damaged and most likely trimmed. TERRIBLE!

A busy thread that has a link to a card, picture or something else that everyone’s talking about, but no one has added the actual image to the thread to make it easy for everyone to know what’s going on...so you annoyingly have no choice but to start clicking and following links to get up to speed.

So, here is the card in question...

I’d be hard pressed to like this 8 more than many newer grade 2-4s. Can’t include a pic right now but psa 67861509 is a better looking 3.5.

Here's an older image of the card I found on another site.

I can definitely agree, it certainly looks like tape removal.

refz 08-10-2024 01:10 PM

I wouldn’t bid on that

perezfan 08-11-2024 11:44 AM

I would get a 2.5 if I submitted that to PSA (which I wouldn't).

Brian 08-11-2024 12:05 PM

Unbelievable. Yet believable!

jingram058 08-11-2024 12:20 PM

It's about the same condition as mine, roughly. Rather than tape removal, mine is trimmed. But then, I only paid $250 for mine. Which at the time seemed like a lot. Frankly, this is the best looking playing days Lou Gehrig card of them all, IMO. To me, no pre-war collection would be complete without one, and the #144 Ruth to go with it. But then, I wouldn't pay thousands for any card, blemished or otherwise. Thank God I didn't have to.

mrreality68 08-11-2024 03:05 PM

I am not judging but someone is bidding on the grade.

Well some people want it and it is at $55k before BP so more than 1 person is buying the slab over the eye appeal.

Crazy how important that PSA registry is to some people ,
glad I never went down that road

ullmandds 08-11-2024 04:04 PM

Whoever is bidding on this card is making me feel a lot less stupid about losing $1000 on fractional ownership of a t206 plank.

Johnny630 08-12-2024 06:48 AM

Still sold for $93,000 ?? Wow will this now play musical chairs from auction house to auction house within the next year? I'll be standing by watching.

I doubt it. It will end up in somebody's registry for a period.

Leon 08-12-2024 07:48 AM

Yeap. Then one day they will look at it and say "WTF did I do, this card looks like crap!" Oh yeah, I went from 9th to 8th on the registry. That makes it all worth it.
