New Member intro, Question on Grading "narrow" AB back t206
2 Attachment(s)
Hello All-
I am new to net54. My neighbor suggested I join. I am slowly getting back into cards, mostly t206s, now that my kids are old enough to get into sports cards themselves. they like steph curry and brock purdy cards... i prefer the older stuff but I am thrilled to support them. I collected in the 80s and 90s with my dad. Bought a LOT of t206 cards from Mike Wheat auctions in the late 90s early 2000s. I am getting into grading a lot of the cards i bought with my dad and some of the raw ones i have picked up recently. which brings me to this one... Glove Near Ground Konetchy. its an American Beauty no border. Pretty low pop count on this one. The sides look a little narrow consistent with many American Beauty Cards. I dont see any evidence of trimming. I really dont want this to come back any a N6 or not correct size and not get a grade. anyone have and experience with SGC or PSA in which is more likely to recognize this back ran "narrow" and this is normal and give it a numerical grade. My preference would be to send it to SGC. I see they have only ever graded one of these and it got an "A" grade... which is what i am trying to avoid. anyone have luck sending over AB backs that are narrower to SGC and getting a number grade? or should this go to PSA they have graded more of them and given them number grades. thanks for having me. I look forward to learning a lot here |

Welcome, Joe!
I don't see why it wouldn't grade numerically. The borders don't look any smaller than an AB back typically would; in fact, they actually look bigger than most AB borders. So I would think either PSA or SGC would be fine for submitting. As for value, PSA typically may net you a higher resale value if/when you sell, and SGC may be cheaper to submit and certainly will turn the card around and get it back to you quicker. Good luck! |

Is that correct? If you haven't already, I would see if there is an image available of that 'A' card to see if it is obvious what caused it to be assessed that way. It may be in godawful shape, or been trimmed down or have some other reason that led to it getting that particular grade (and not due to the narrow sizing). But if it does look like yours, then that makes it a bit tricky to decide what to do next. Good luck with it!! |

that was a good idea. Little google search and I think i found it. its definitely on the rougher side. see pics below. I am still "new" to grading so I am not sure of the condition is enough to warrant an "A" for authentic. there is no comment about trimming and its borders look way rougher than mine. Then again, I dont think my card was trimmed. just really trying to avoid the "A" grade. SGC has only graded one of these? better to have the highest graded SGC one, or one of a handful of PSA ones? |
It was only a recent change that had SGC indicating trimming, etc., on the 'Authentic' labels, and that card predates it, so there's nothing to be taken from it. The card certainly looks to be big time short side to side (trimmed), so that is probably the reason for the grade.
I would agree with vthobby and send it in to SGC, because it's a quick and pretty cheap way to get an actual answer, instead of listening to us random internet guys. LOL. :D:eek::D |
Both companies can be all over the place when it comes to grading the AB's. I think at least with today's grading it has to do more with what they see on the edges than what the size is. In general the 460's are a little smaller than the 350's.
There are several good examples of smaller than normal AB's receiving grades in this thread. Take a look at Ted's Frank chance in post #22 of. Ted also cracked out a Jennings (post #92) from an SGC A holder and had it graded by SGC again and they graded it an SGC 60 (post #138) https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=158706 |
Your Konetchy AB will grade out. I actually have one for sale on the BST right now, a PSA 2.5 here's the link https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=352393
