What is this thing? And other fun I found.
I was sorting a box of Tommy Bridges items as I'm trying to catalogue everything I have relating to him and I came across this item. For the life of me I can't figure out where it might have originated from and honestly I don't even remember acquiring it, which is also rare for me. Has anyone seen something like this before and know what box or advertisement it might have been cut from? It's stiff thick cardboard and 1.5"x1.5".
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...04e2d29a_b.jpg And here's some other random items I found in the box. I really need to get the Cloplay Foto Fun and the Annis Furs Graded and move them to display case. The rest I have graded copies displayed and these are duplicates I've acquired through the years. I actually completely forgot I had the signed Wide Pen in the second post. The first item is my great-grandfather's WW1 draft card and it was signed by the head of the local draft board, Tommy's father Dr. Bridges. Hope you guys enjoy some 1930's randomness. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6899ed95_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0a9414b1_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...29282c07_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...96289e47_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b81a34bb_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9880701c_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b709c279_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...419e154d_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...defc4873_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7e4daa8f_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6d7e92ec_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...35effd33_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f1170aa4_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c19ec47b_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f8769075_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...15061d9c_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bee55b3c_c.jpg |

Maybe a Wheaties box type of thing?

Team yearbook or heavier stock game program?

My guess is it was cut off of a box. Most likely an equipment box of some sort. I have come across similar items they are tough to source unless you find an uncut box. For instance: A Nellie Fox i came across at the bottom of a box that held a card collection. Unable to source for decades...until I came across someone selling Nellie fox baseball cleats and there it was..
Good luck. |
Neat little collection. Would guess it was issued in 1942 or 1943 since it doesn't have his full career with the Tigers. And what a nice career he had! Due to its small size, I'm wondering if it might have been cut from a team poster of some kind from those years.

No help with the identification for the Bridges item, but I thought I would point out its interesting "1931-1942" designation. Tommy played his entire career for the Tigers, but actually pitched in 8 games for them in 1930. Also, the 1942 end date would seem to peg this item as being produced in 1942, as Bridges pitched for the Tigers in 1943, served in the military in 1944, and finished off his career with a couple more partial years with the Tigers in 1945 and 1946.

Thanks for the replies! I think I'm leaning towards Jonathan's suggestion of a sporting equipment box as even accounting for the paste on the back the cardboard is more than twice as thick as the Wheaties panels. I also agree with Brian that it certainly dates to 42-43. Here's some other random odds and ends from the box I didn't previously already have scans for.

Oh, I thought you'd found a girl/woman when I saw this thread's title. They're rare on this board.

And Greenberg's bio info on the panel indicates his playing career was 1930-1941. He was drafted into the Army in May 1941, released on December 5, 1941, then re-enlisted in February of 1942.

I am going to hypothesize that there is at least one more panel with Cobb, Heilmann, Manush, etc., making up the sides of a box that contained something to do with all-time great Detroit players and issued in 1942. What could that be?
