Archive Photos Question

I was looking at an archive of photos of minor leaguers from the 1930's. Why do some of the photos look like they are in shattered glass?

Those are acetate negatives, probably 4x5, that were damaged by heat. The scans can be fixed in Adobe photoshop, but it would take a bit of work and time on each one.
