Thursday Trivia: 11 years ago...

In 2014, there was a tie for most hits in the National League (184). Name just one of the two players.

John1941 05-08-2025 04:49 PM

I can't remember the name, but I think one of them scored 111 runs in 602 at-bats. I remember him as being a National. Actually, pretty sure it was Rendon.

bk400 05-08-2025 05:15 PM

Freddie Freeman

BobbyStrawberry 05-08-2025 05:58 PM

Good guesses, but no. One of them was a National, though. The other was a Phillie.

Phillie had to Chase Utley

Not in 2014. He was on the downside by then as were the Phillies. I finally had to give up and look, and I would never have thought of the right answer.

The Flyin' Hawaiian?

Isn't it silly that I remember his nickname, but his actual name eludes me.

Shane Victorino was also near the end of his career by 2014. The Phillies good run with Utley, Rollins, Howard, etc was from 2005-2012 and was then followed by a number of bad years before their current resurgence. They were 73-89 in 2014 when they had a player tie for the lead in hits.

If someone answers either one and swears they didn’t look it up I will be skeptical, to say the least.

Peter_Spaeth 05-09-2025 02:10 PM

Was Ryan Zimmerman on the Nationals then?

BobbyStrawberry 05-09-2025 03:18 PM

Not Victorino. Zimmerman was on the team but it's not him.

Hint:

Both guys were drafted by and made their MLB debut with the Twins.

bk400 05-09-2025 05:14 PM

Once you starting getting into the Twins, I have to call no mas!

2014 was certainly a weird year in the NL. 1st 7 guys (aside from 1) in Hits are fairly anonymous or flash in the panners, and the one who isn't, is not exactly known for piling up the hits (or even being healthy for a full season).

Also weird, it was only 11 years ago and we've already all forgotten these guys. :(
