anybody know this Senators set?

I picked up a bunch of 18 of these in a smaller auction a few years ago and now I can't remember or find any info about them.
It's from 1924, judging by the players. There was no WaJo in the group but I expect he was included. Any info would be welcome! |
Could they be these? Blurb from auction house: In 1924 the National Photo Co. commemorated the Washington Senators' World Series title with a set of real photographs, slightly larger than baseball card size and each with a facsimile signature of the player on the front. While not listed in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, these are every bit part of a rare baseball card set despite being real photographs. An undervalued item that is a fantastic cross-collectible as they are indeed actual photographs from the National Photo Company, but someday will be recognized for the baseball cards they are.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...eeab80d3d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1db9fbd5ac.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6755ef555b.jpg

They should have the national photo stamp on the back. I had one with Wajo and several others and their kids.

Good point Lucas, I should have included a back. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9bf1beff1d.jpg

I believe these were made for the players, issued in a small black autograph-type booklet with one or two attached to each black page. One or two complete booklets have emerged from players' estates over the years, and another one or two sets or groups with the photos removed from the albums. There are somewhere around 20-25 different poses, of which three or four include WaJo. I'm sure Val Kehl has been paying attention to these for decades now, and should have more to add about them. I've never really considered them cards, more as photos or premiums, but I don't have a problem with those who do.
|
I love the quality of them. No shade on 20s issues but these really show the players as well as anything.
|
Val Kehl would be one of my go to guys for a question like this.
|
Cool!
That is definitely the set, thanks! I have a name to call them in my Type collection now. I'll check to see if there are back stamps on mine. And yes, I expect Val knows about these- I was hoping he might join the thread.

Hank, Scott and Tim, thanks for your kind words, but I doubt that I know any more about these photos than you all do.
I have 29 of these more-or-less 4" x 5" photos that I won in a Legendary Auction back in 2010. 28 of my 29 photos have the National Photo back stamp - my Peckinpaugh photo has a blank back. There appears to be a very close connection between these photos and the Senators 1924 World Series Program (the Washington version). For those not familiar with this WS Program, it is non-traditional in that it contains No narratives and NO statistics. The insides of the front and back covers are scorecards. The 1st inside page has pics of the top 3 MLB officials. The 2nd inside page has pics of the top 3 Senators team officials. All of the remaining inside pages consist of pics of the Senators players, as follows: Page 3: Group pic of all 9 pitchers. Pages 4-12: One page with 3 pics for each pitcher in this sequence - Walter Johnson, Tom Zachary, George Mogridge, Fred Marberry, Joe Martina, By Speece, Warren Ogden, Allen Russell, and Paul Zahniser. Page 13: Group pic of all 3 catchers. Pages 14-16: One page with 3 pics for each catcher, in this sequence - Muddy Ruel, Bennett Tate, and William Hargrave. Page 17: Group pic of the 4 primary infielders. Pages 18-21: One page with 3 pics for each infielder, in this sequence - Joe Judge (!st B.), Bucky Harris (2nd B. & Mgr.), Roger Peckinpaugh (SS), and Ossie Bluege (3rd B.). Page 22: Group pic of the 4 primary outfielders. Pages 23-26: One page with 3 pics for each outfielder, in this sequence - Sam Rice (RF), Goose Goslin (LF), Earl McNeely (CF), and Nemo Leibold (CF). Page 27: Group pic of the 3 reserve players. Pages 28-30: One page with 2 pics for each reserve, in this sequence - Ernest Shirley, Tom Taylor and Ralph Miller. Page 31: 5 pics of coaches Nick Altrock and Al Schacht. Page 32: 2 pics of trainer Mike Martin. The WS Program pics for each player consist of 1 portrait pic and 2 action pics (except 1 action pic for each reserve player). Now then, my collection of 29 photos consists of the following: - 22 action photos of the 23 players: 1 photo of each, missing only Ossie Bluege. EACH of these 22 photos MATCHES an action pic in the WS Program!! - 2 portrait photos: 1 of WaJo and 1 of Bucky Harris. EACH of these 2 photos photos MATCHES a portrait pic in the WS Program!! - 1 photo of coaches Altrock and Schacht together that MATCHES a pic in the WS Program!! - 1 group photo of all 9 pitchers that MATCHES a pic in the WS Program!! - 3 photos that DON'T APPEAR in the WS program, as follows: --- 1 photo of WaJo standing next to primary catcher Muddy Ruel. --- 1 action photo of Bucky Harris. --- 1 action photo of Wid Matthews, who was acquired via trade from Milwaukee on 6/2/24 and was traded to Sacramento on 8/10/24. Here are the 3 links to some additional info I found for these photos: https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...a/7116-79534.s https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...gton-senators/ https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=108608 I don't know when these photos were issued, how many different photos were issued, who they were issued to, and whether or not they were issued as a set. As I mentioned earlier, the one player that I don't have a photo of is Ossie Bluege. If anyone has a Bluege photo they are willing to part with, please let me know. I had my 29 photos as part of my show-and-tell display at either the winter 2023 or winter 2024 (I can't remember which) Net54 get together near Dulles Airport in No. Va. that was hosted by Andrew and Ryan. If anyone is interested in seeing them, I'll gladly bring them again to the 2026 Net54 get together. |

I seem to recall a photo of a number of players with their kids as part of that set. As I mentioned, I remember a complete booklet auctioned off years ago from a player's estate, and I believe that's how they all were issued originally. There were a bunch in WaJo's scrapbooks, but I have no idea if that constituted a complete set or not.
