I found this one about 3 days too late..... Story of my life Mike! :)

We've all been there Dan!

I'm sure you'll turn another one up for your collection down the line.

I know nothing about this set but it is astonishing that it took almost 100 years before a Gehrig was found. To those cheering on Dan, I am sure he appreciates it but think about it...not so sure a Gehrig is just going to pop up again anytime soon.

Best of luck Dan. I am guessing someone got a good deal on the lot.

Like Chase I am amazed, and I don't remember another vintage set in the past few decades that had a card of such a prominent player finally discovered. However, the Leader Novelty set is one prone to additions...check out this thread from about 12 years ago that identified 12 or 13 new cards added to its list of known subjects:

That final price seems really low? Is that a true market price for the Gehrig?

I would think it would be substantially higher, not only because it is a Gehrig card, but also currently the only copy known to exist. I don't believe the seller did themselves any favor by not looking into the identification of the cards in the lot.

The price these 3 cards went for is very low, primarily because the seller obviously didn't know that these are 1929 Leader Novelty Candy cards. Also, the eBay seller listed them as a 5-day auction, which gave potential bidders less time to discover them than if they had benn listed as a 10-day auction. This shows that there are still eBay finds to be had. Dan, sorry you missed out on the Gehrig.

I am stunned, repeatedly, by how ignorant so many sellers are about what they sell. It’s glorious. Fools and their money, soon parted, ideally by me. Of course, for every seller who ignorantly throws away money in an eBay listing, there are 1,000 chimps who want $4 a card for 1988 Donruss commons.

Wow

That Gehrig has to be a 7500 plus card. Very cool. Thanks for posting Dan!

There have been a few others, but they don't immediately come to mind.

Weren't we reading about a new Ruth discovery within the last year or less (and wasn't it a N54 member who discovered it at a garage sale)?

A new to the hobby Lou Gehrig is a huge thing. I just hope the person who won the auction is the one who ends up with the card.:)

That’s a good point - I remember a Gunther beer can being sold for $50 it was worth thousands - some collector(s) Contacted the seller (with offers) and the sale was canceled - this is probably more than 20 years ago I don’t know If shenanigans like that can still happen ,
Also it was a buy it now

Unfortunately it still happens ALL the time with silly rare stuff. Over the years I have had it happen several times. I would bet the seller received multiple offers to not ship it and sell it to them for more.

Wow, shocked that a Gehrig has been found. Auction price definitely is very low.

Certainly not Gehrig but a few years ago we had the first known examples of the 1921 Self-developing strip cards of Zack Wheat, George Sisler, Rabbit Maranville, and George Kelly.

A little later we handled the first ever (and still only) 1909 version of the Rose Company Cy Young card. there were 2 or 3 known 1908 versions, but he was traded between seasons, and like Rose company did with other players who changed teams, they added a sticker to cover his team name for the 1909 version.
