SGC Reslab question
I believe PSA had/has a policy where they will reholder a damaged slab maintaining the same grade...is this true????
I have a damaged sgc slab i would like replaced...it's an older grade and I doubt the card would receive the same grade today which would be the difference of thousands of dollars. Any thoughts??? |
It is a case by case thing. It depends on if the damage to the slab could have caused damage to the card or if the case was damaged enough that the card could be swapped out.

I've never had any trouble sending in damaged slab for a re-holder. But mine haven't been in the price range of your card.

I had a good experience having them reslabbing a ~2K card. As pointed out, obviously it's case by case, but my sense with both PSA and SGC is that if the case is not cracked enough to appear to potentially affect the card inside, they will reslab at same grade. I've done it maybe 10 times and never had a grade changed.

thx for the opines and suggestions. I think if I remember correctly I caused the damage??? I'll bring it to the natty and see.
thx guys. |
As long as the slab hasn’t been cracked open they will reholder it no problem. Have done this dozens of times with older beaten up slabs. When you go to their submission page you change the drop down from “Raw Card Grading” to “Reholder”. You will then enter the certificate number for the slab and that’s it. They do slabs up to $2500 for the same price as a raw card grade.

Not that it may or may not be beneficial, but I would try getting in touch before sending in and let them know you do not want it reslabbed if they are going to drop the grade. My thought is a cracked grade is better than a dropped grade. Just my $.02

I guess my only question is whether they really will be willing (and able) to be that flexible. I would be paranoid that step 1 would be cracking it out of the current case, and by the time they decide whether or not a downgrade is appropriate, it's too late to put that genie back in the bottle and go back to just the original cracked case. Most of my paranoia stems from the TPGs not being really responsive to customer requests, particularly when it disrupts the normal flow of the grading process. Or you could argue that they're not real responsive in general, which further proves the point. |

This is exactly why I no longer grade anything. And too your point, my above suggestion may not be executable, or may get lost in translation , or just not cared about. Either way, its a gamble IMHO. |
I literally just sent a card to be reholdered at SGC yesterday because the case was scratched up on back and front. I didn’t feel like waiting a month for it — it is an expensive card — so I paid $40 for 1-2 day service to be “reholdered” so it should come back with new case but original serial number which I provided for them….
