Site Slowness Issues

1 Attachment(s)
I am aware of the site hanging and being very slow the last day or two. A support ticket was just opened. Sorry for the inconvenience.

And a card...

Paid extra for the oversized borders...Centering isn't bad either.

Brent G. 07-16-2025 03:33 PM

Well that's fast service, Leon, because it's lightning-fast by comparison now!

Bite your tongue :). I haven't gotten a resoponse from the support company but sometimes they do stuff and then tell me....

and a Spencer Shoes Premium...

Lucas00 07-16-2025 05:37 PM

Seems to be fixed for me now

rdwyer 07-16-2025 05:47 PM

I noticed the slowness also. Was gonna report it, but thought it was on my end.

Fun find at Atlanta Baseball Card shop

Was trying to kill some time today and went to a shop in Logansville Georgia. Found an autographed ball from a former Atlanta Black Cracker Player Red Moore. Wonder if there are vintage cards from the negro league teams like the Black Crackers?

Seems to have slowed again. Can barely load threads

The engineer checked last night and monitored it until today. He is very, very good and I have used him for a few years.

"The server was running high cpu but the wasn’t anything unusual. I’ve watched it over night and checked this AM and it seems to be running more smoothly."

It is still being monitored. Another member sent me a Database Error message last night...so that is probably the culprit. It's a very old forum so it's not surprising to get a few of these situations.

The slowness is back.

Me too. It's running super slow and hanging up. So, the engineer asked if it was about normal traffic and I said, yes. However, when I look now, there are approximately +/- 10x the number that normally view it. And all sections are about the same in that respect. Now to find the fix...

They said they might have to upgrade the DB server. We'll see. I doubt the pain is over yet.
Because of that, everyone gets a 10% discount off of their membership!!

and a few random cards...

jingram058 07-18-2025 09:31 AM

Much faster page loading today; like normal. Something that was done worked!

horzverti 07-18-2025 10:41 AM

Site fast, site slow. It happens. Just remain patient. I am just happy to have this site.

Thanks Leon

Leon 07-18-2025 03:42 PM

Going to be this way for a few days or so...

Thanks Curt.

It's going to be this way for a few days or so, it looks like. Here is what the engineer said this morning...(And this is if all goes well....)

"I need to upgrade the db but first I had to take a backup. You have server level veam backups but we need to be able to take an up to the minute copy.

I took a copy last night and I restored it to the other server so I could test upgrading the databases. If it works, we will have to do it for real which require taking the site offline for at least 6-8.

It takes a long time to do a backup because the attachment table is now 46GB. A Mysqldump is single threaded, so I had to use a tool to thread it and get it down to 2-3 hours. But that is 2-3 hours to backup and 2-3 to restore and the site must be offline during.

I’m not finished testing the new db, but in the meantime there may be intermittent slowness."

.
So that is where we are...thanks for everyone's patience.

veam backups

attachment table

Mysqldump is single threaded

I know the feeling. Sometimes when I back up from the table and go take a sqldump, it can take a while.

Not mine, but perhaps a fitting and very rare card for this rare occasion…T206 "Slow Joe" Doyle, N. Y. Nat'l (hands above head) error

Leon 07-19-2025 09:16 AM

Not quite yet...

Even though the site is running fine at this minute, the engineer said the database upgrade was unsuccessful. So, there is going to be some more pain, most likely, before it gets better. It's being worked on...thanks for everyone's patience.

.

Leon 07-21-2025 07:56 AM

Still being worked on

Obviously, the site is still running a little slow. We are trying to figure out where all of the BOT viewers and active users are coming from. That is what is slowing the site. This morning it showed (publicly at bottom of the screen) there were over 66 thousand active users There should be around 600 or so....

That's funny, David....well, not real funny on my side, but thanks for posting it. I always appreciate some humor.

A quick update... The BOT situation isn't going to go away completely until we get some security s/w to keep them from viewing the forum. I don't even think it's all malicious, but I could be wrong. We have been on the web so long that there are tons of crawlers, or whatever, looking at our information. Maybe AI is doing it from other sites, I don't know. It is the number 1 thing I will be working on until it's fixed. I am already impatient and running a slow website almost triggers me LOL....

And a poorly cut D311...

it is much, much faster than the last few days. Something must have helped or worked. Maybe they are off for the weekend :)

Slowness

Leon -

===> Just an observation on my part (as a retired 30 year IT guy) <===

it appears to be just about 10 seconds between clicking on a link and having the page open.

You may need to get a Hardware Firewall between your web server and the internet.

Bots are a problem that I have dealt with many times over and it always comes down to how much money do you want to spend on the resolution.

pawpawdiv9 08-09-2025 12:17 PM

The wi-fi today is a lot faster than back in the 90's when we had 'Aol dial-up"
doesn't bother me, just be patient.

Netscape Navigator here -

Yea I can still here the awful noise of the telephone modem connecting :)

Lucas00 08-09-2025 01:22 PM

The site up to yesterday was working spectacularly for a week or so. Not sure if that helps at all. But it's back to slow, though not nearly as bad as it was a week ago.

Leon 08-09-2025 01:34 PM

I agree. I am looking at Cloudflare and will get with my tech support company on Monday....A firewall can be costly but not as much as if I jump off of a cliff!

Funny that our situation coincides with the end (at long last) of AOL support for dial-up connections!

On a desktop use of Net54, the site is now making me log back in after a short amount of time. Is this something new?

I am not aware of that. I am aware of folks not logged in, not being able to see the front page. I am not sure I care too much about that. My main concern is when the BOTs get to be about 10000, the site starts slowing down.

.

minibbcards 08-12-2025 11:49 AM

50000

unfortunately the bots are back above 50000 now.

and yes, i noticed that after being idle for a period of time the site logs you out. not a big issue, but i have the site up in the background while working

I'm experiencing the same.

Beercan collector 08-12-2025 08:59 PM

It’s weird I’ve been here for three years and I don’t think I’ve ever been logged out - right now it’s as fast as it’s ever been, about one second - The worst I can remember was about 18 seconds and I can actually live with that

We are working on a better solution and might revert back to the way it was before this evening.

That said, if anyone is getting automatically logged out, that is an issue and a setting will have to be changed?
