PSA = Please Submit Again
 

I'm at a loss at this point. I have a 1921 Exhibits Stan Coveleskie, graded by SGC in May of 2024 as authentic Altered. Its an appropriately graded as its terrible shape. This card has a total PSA pop of 40, and I need it for my restricted HOF player set.

I submitted back in March and it got an N9, with PSA claiming "they do not grade this card." I even put in the comments, "slab as authentic altered." After talking to 3 different customer service people I was told to confirm with the spec number for the card with the Customer Request Center to confirm PSA would grade the card. They confirmed they grade 1921 exhibits and gave me the spec number

Fast forward to June, I resubmit the card again. In the comments I give the spec number and and "Please slab as authentic altered." It again comes back as an N9 and also says minimum grade. I'm truly at a loss for words for how frustrating this process is. My only plan of action is to submit it at the national and talk to their people there. The only silver lining is I've only paid $40 for this card to bounce between the west and east coast and not pay for the grading costs.

QUESTION: Has anyone run into this before where SGC slabbed a beater but PSA on their high horse won't? If anyone has any other suggestions on how i can get this card into a PSA slab I would love to hear it. Appreciate everyone who let me rant.

I definitely have a couple beater E98s in SGC slabs that PSA won't cross, presumably due to paper loss on the back they can't confirm which set the card is actually from?

I feel your pain man. I understand that the card is fragile. Have you thought about cracking and submitting? I'm flirting with that idea as I paid $20 for this card an a PSA 1 goes for $220. I feel like if the card is raw it takes away the too fragile excuse?

I have considered cracking it out, but I would rather just upgrade it at some point.

It might be the case that PSA feels the piece too fragile to risk removing it from the SGC holder and then making it through the sonic sealing process. The amount of time it would take them to rectify that issue would not be worth it. Easier to just take a pass on trying.

This is def the case. Maybe put in writing that if the card explodes during encapsulation they are not liable.

I did this around 10 years ago with t206 broadleaf 460 baker. They did it for me but it's under new ownership. Hopefully you complete the quest.

On wrecked cards (no offense to the OP), there is a lack of consistency. PSA authenticated and slabbed this one:

SGC did it.

The irony of the whole thing is that the cards that need encapsulation the most for preservation are the damaged ones.

I completely agree, its an absolute pain.

UPDATE I spoke to someone at PSA today who said its up to the discretion of the grader if they want to slab a card or not. I'm so glad we give this level of authority to graders when i'm asking for a basic service to be done.To the point of another commenter I asked if I could release liability for card damage and PSA said no. My next option is to take it to the national for drop off and see if I can talk to management or someone there about what can be done. I'm willing to pay your stated price to put a card in a piece of plastic, its wild they don't take me up on it!

The final option is just to crack it, throw some more tape on it and send it via a bulk grader to see if I can get in their good graces that way.
